Jasprit Bumrah Blasted For Skipping 2nd Test Against England

Jasprit Bumrah is an Indian professional cricketer widely regarded as one of the best pace bowlers in cricket history. While he has had a stellar career, his journey as a cricketer has not been without its ups and downs. India’s premier fast bowler has suffered various injuries throughout his career, which have sidelined him for extended periods of time. One of the worst injuries he picked up was a back injury, which continues to trouble him to this day. It is due to this back injury that Bumrah needs to manage his workload, especially in the longer formats of the game, such as Test cricket. This article discusses Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from the 2nd Test against England.

India is playing in a five-match Test series against the England cricket team from 20th June 2025 to 4th August 2025. This is a crucial series for the Indian cricket team, and Jasprit Bumrah, India’s best bowler, will play a key role in helping the team win the series against England. However, while Bumrah played in the first Test, he opted to sit out of the second Test, despite it being almost a week after the first Test ended. This is because Bumrah intends to participate in only three of the five Test matches in the series, as he wants to manage his workload to prevent aggravating his back injury and missing multiple games due to injury.

According to reports, Jasprit Bumrah was in contention with Shubman Gill to be named India’s Test captain after Rohit Sharma retired. However, it was due to this reason that Bumrah opted to exclude himself from captaincy talks. Bumrah knew that he would not be able to be available for every Test match due to his back problems and thought it would be unfair for the captain to miss games. While Jasprit Bumrah has a valid reason for opting to rest in some games, some people are unhappy with his decision to miss games and feel that Bumrah should either play all games or not be involved in the Indian squad for the series at all.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar spoke about Bumrah missing the 2nd Test against England. He said:

“What is important is playing for India, and if you are unfit, then don’t play at all. He had a gap of almost seven-eight days after the first Test match but still was not included for the second Test, which was not acceptable. Maybe it was acceptable for Agarkar and Gambhir. I’m not in favour of bowlers picking and choosing Test matches. If you’re fit and available, you should play all the matches for your country. Bumrah is a world-class bowler, and he can win matches for India. But once you’re on tour, you need to play every match. There’s no question of selecting matches based on personal preference.”

Jasprit Bumrah missing games for India is not an ideal situation, but most fans still feel that it is the best possible course of action. Given his back injury, it would be impossible to play him in every game, as that would likely trigger a recurrence of his back injury. However, Bumrah is without a shadow of doubt India’s best bowler, and it would not bode well for them to exclude him from the squad entirely. The best-case scenario is the current situation, where India utilises Jasprit Bumrah for most games but gives him periods of rest in between, allowing him to manage his workload effectively. It is likely that India will continue with this current arrangement.
