Rohit Sharma boasts an excellent record as the captain of India, since taking over from Virat Kohli across all formats. However, he particularly excels in the shortest format of the game with the Men in Blue registering a solid win rate in T20Is under his captaincy.
India went on to record a 2-1 series win over Australia in their recent outing and surpassed Pakistan’s record of winning the most T20I matches in a calendar year. Following the series win over Australia, Rohit Sharma overtook former skipper Virat Kohli to be India’s second most successful captain in T20Is.
After a series win over Australia, the Rohit Sharma led Indian cricket team went on to record yet another series win against South Africa. It was his 10th bilateral series win since taking over as the full time captain of the Men in Blue. He has recorded 35 wins as captain of India in T20 Internationals, just seven behind India’s most successful T20I captain MS Dhoni.
42 – MS Dhoni, in 72 matches
35 – Rohit Sharma, in 45 matches*
32 – Virat Kohli, in 50 matches
With Rohit Sharma’s next assignment seeing him feature in the highly anticipated T20 World Cup, it is also worth noting that the Indian team captain is also the fourth highest run-scorer in the ICC event history. With Mahela Jayawardene (1016) Chris Gayle (965) and Tilakaratne Dilshan (897) all retired, Rohit Sharma is currently the highest ACTIVE run scorer in the tournament. He has scored 847 runs in the ICC T20 World Cup in 31 matches.

Sharma is also one of the only two players that have played in every T20 world Cup. He needs just 169 runs to edge past Jayawardene’s tally. The MI captain has been in excellent form citing the recently concluded T20I series against Australia and South Africa. He will fancy the chances to end as the highest run-getter in the T20 World Cup history.
Why could Rohit Sharma retire from T20Is after ICC T20 World Cup in Australia?
The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia could very well also be Sharma’s last outing in the ICC event with the 35 year old’s age being a major determining factor. Captaining any team across all three formats of the game takes a heavy toll on the body and with Rohit Sharma on the wrong side of the 30’s, he is suspected to retire from one format of the game.
It is a common trend for players currently to let go of a certain format in order to focus on other games to maintain fitness and avoid injuries. The upcoming ICC 50 over World Cup 2023 is set to be played in India and could be a major factor of focus for the Indian captain.
Rohit will be over 37 years old while the next T20 world Cup kicks off after the event in Australia. With the rise of players like Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson in leadership roles, Sharma could be prompted to hang up his boots in the shortest format of the game. It would allow the next captain to formulate a team according to his preferences for the next T20 WC while Rohit looks to lead India at home in the ICC 50 over World Cup in 2023.
