Irfan Pathan to Make Comeback In T20 World Cup 2022?

Team India’s troubles prior to the most awaited T20 World Cup 2022 are just increasing by the day. After losing their main all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to injury a couple of weeks ago, they’re now likely to miss out on leading pacer Jasprit Bumrah as well. Both these major blows for the Men in Blue ahead of this ICC event in Australia which begins on 16th October 2022.

The internet is speculating several names that could be potential replacements for these players down under later this month. Some are suggesting Mohammed Siraj could make the team, while Avesh Khan is also a frontrunner. But we also believe that there’s another option in the form of an in-form all-rounder, Irfan Pathan.

Irfan Pathan to make India squad for T20 World Cup 2022?

For those of you who aren’t following the smaller leagues right now, there’s the Road Safety World Series 2022 taking place right now where the younger Pathan brother is representing India Legends, who have qualified for the final of this retired players league. And mind you, Pathan is in red hot form as well, picking wickets as well as scoring runs in this tournament.

He’s also representing Bhilwara Kings at the Legends League Cricket T20 tournament taking place simultaneously, where he’s getting more runs than wickets right now. The 37-year-old has played as many as nine games in the month of September and has been putting in all-round performances, including one massive effort of 37 (12)* against Australia Legends recently, taking India into the RSWS 2022 final.

That last game on 28th Sep 2022 saw Irfan Pathan smashing two fours and four sixes, batting at a strike rate of over 300 which is incredible! When his elder brother was dismissed, India Legends were in trouble at 125/5 in the 16th over but he decided to take the bull by its horns and drive his team home. This knock included three consecutive sixes against Dirk Nannes in the 19th over of the innings.

Yes, we know what you’re thinking that Pathan is long retired and hasn’t played international cricket. Of course we know that and we’re just having some fun here, knowing that Team India is losing some important players ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022. They’ve lost two good bowling resources and the other existing ones including Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Siraj, and others are not heavily experienced.

The situation takes us back to BBL 2021/2022 where Sydney Sixers were hampered with Covid-19 positive cases and with absolutely no options left on the bench, they had to literally bring in their assistant coach, Jay Lenton to take the field. India’s situation is nowhere remotely close to that and we’re still frontrunners to bring home the title.

Let’s hope we don’t have any further injuries or other absentees ahead of this major ICC event, as it’s been 9 years since India last won an ICC trophy, last securing the Champions Trophy 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
