Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared how Rohit Sharma and Co made a major mistake in the final few overs. He goes on to state that the Men in Blue should have opted to backed young seamer Arshdeep Singh to bowl the 19th overs in their previous game.
The Indian cricket team suffered a narrow 6 wicket loss to Sri Lank in their ongoing Asia Cup clash on Tuesday. It was the second successive loss in the Super 4 encounters. The defeat against the islandic nation pushed the Rahul Dravid coached side dangerous close to being eliminated in the ongoing 6 nation tournament.
Riding on skipper Rohit Sharma’s 41-ball 72, the Indian team managed to put up a score of 173 on board at the end of the first innings. In reply, Sri Lanka successfully chased down 174 with a ball to spare. The 2011 World Cup winners were in the running to win the game. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded 14 runs in the penultimate over when the equation saw Sri Lanka needing 21 runs in 12 balls.
Speaking on Star Sports, the former Indian all rounder pointed out that there was now dew on the ground and how the spinners had claimed wickets in the second innings. Irfan Pathan also went on to reason his opinion on why left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh should have been handed the ball in the 19th over instead of the 20th. The 37 year old feels that the young speedsters’ ‘angles ‘ could have worked out for for India. Despite Singhs’ best effort, he failed to defend 7 runs in the last 6 balls as Sri Lanka triumphed in 19.5 overs.

Irfan Pathan was quoted saying, “There is not any dew on the ground, as you can see. Bowling makes it simpler. The spinners also received some help. All of the wickets that were lost came from spinners. At least some of the ball was holding. No wickets were taken by fast bowlers.”
” I think Rohit Sharma missed a trick, a couple of times. First, Deepak Hooda failed to bowl, and second, Arshdeep ought to have bowled the 19th over given the left arm’s favourable angles for the ball to move away. That had the potential to be so much better. Not just after the game, but also during analysis, I had said that,“ Irfan Pathan added.
