The orange cap is given to the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League. The coveted orange cap was introduced in the inaugural season of the IPL. Here we present a list of players who have won this prestigious Orange Cap through the years.

Shaun Marsh

Australian white-ball opener Shaun Marsh made his debut in IPL with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the inaugural season of the league. Marsh played 11 matches for KXIP and scored 616 runs at an average of 68.44 with a healthy strike rate of 139.68. He also scored five 50s and one 100s, with 115 as his highest score in the competition.

Matthew Hayden

Another hard-hitting Australian opener Matthew Hayden played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In 2009, Hayden was the Orange Cap holder in the tournament. He played 12 matches for CSK and scored 572 runs at an average of 52 with a strike rate of 144.81. He also scored five 50s with the highest score of 89.

Sachin Tendulkar

One of the finest players in the world, Sachin Tendulkar, is on the list of Orange Cap holders. In 2010, Tendulkar was the leading run-scorer in the tournament playing for Mumbai Indians (MI). He played 15 matches for MI and scored 618 runs (till then, the highest run-scorer in the history of IPL) at an average of 47.53 with a strike rate of 132.61. He also scored five 50s with the highest score of 89 in the competitions.

Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is the only player to win consecutive orange caps in 2011 and 2012 while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In 2011, Gayle played 12 matches for RCB and scored 608 runs at an average of 67.55 with an astonishing strike rate of 183.13. He also scored three 50s and two 100s with the highest score of 107. In 2012, He scored 733 runs (most runs scored by a player in the IPL till 2012) in 15 matches at an average of 61.08 with a reasonable strike rate of 160.74. 

Michael Hussey

Another Australian middle-order left-hander joins the elite list of orange cap holders. Mike Hussey played as an opener for CSK. In 2013, Hussey played 16 matches for CSK and scored 733 runs (equals the record with Gayle) at an average of 52.35 with a healthy strike rate of 129.5. He also scored six 50s in the tournament with the highest score of 95.

Robin Uthappa

Robin Uthappa is the only player in the history of IPL to be a part of the winning team and be an orange cap holder (2014). No other team managed to win the IPL trophy with a player with an orange cap. In 2014, Uthappa played 16 matches for KKR and scored 660 runs at an average of 44 and a healthy strike rate of 137.78.

David Warner

David Warner is the only player to win three orange caps in the history of the IPL in 2015, 2017, and 2019. In 2015, Warner played 14 matches for SRH and scored 562 runs at an average of 43.23 with a strike rate of 156.54. 

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is one of the best batters in the world. Kohli scored 973 runs, most by any player to date in the history of the IPL. While playing for RCB in 2016, Kohli scored 973 runs at 81. 08 with a strike rate of 152.03. He smashed seven 50s and four 100s (most hundred by any player in a single season) in a particular season with the highest score of 113.

Kane Williamson

Another modern-day great comes on the list. In 2018, Kane Williamson replaced Warner as the skipper for SRH. Williamson scored 735 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.5 with a strike rate of 142.44. He scored eight 50s with the highest score of 84.

KL Rahul

Rahul is in prime form and is using it quite well. In 2020, Rahul was the leading run-scorer for KXIP (currently known as Punjab Kings). He played 14 matches for KXIP and scored 670 runs with an average of 55.83 at a strike rate of 129.34. He also scored five 50s and one 100s against his former team RCB, with the highest score of 132.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

The current Indian batting sensation and recently capped player Ruturaj Gaikwad played for CSK in the IPL in 2020. In 2021 Gaikwad was the leading run-scorer in the recently played IPL, scoring 635 runs in 16 matches at an average of 45.35 with a strike rate of 136.26. Gaikwad scored four 50s and one 100s against Rajasthan Royals with the highest score of 100.

The mentioned players have proved to be legends in the IPL. While few are already playing this mega league and earning big bucks from this event, some have retired and are enjoying their second inning in the commentary box or playing a different league.
