IPL Best Catch Of The Season Winners

The Indian Premier League (IPL) witnesses some of the highest levels of cricketing possible, whether it be batting, bowling, or even fielding. The players always have to be at the top of their game and can never let their guard down, not even for a second. This list talks about all the past IPL Catch of the Season award winners, from Kieron Pollard to Suresh Raina, how these players are always aware while playing in an IPL match, and how this helps them complete some of the best catches ever seen.

Which IPL Catches Have Won The Award?

Gurkeerat Singh Mann (Kings XI Punjab) – 2013

Gurkeerat Singh Mann was the first winner of the IPL Catch of the Season award. 2013 was the first time this award was introduced, and it was presented to Gurkeerat Mann for his blinder against Pune Warriors India. In the 13th over on Praveen Kumar’s bowling, Ross Taylor tried to clear the boundary on the legside. It looked like he had managed to get past the fielder, but a heroic dive from Gurkeerat Mann saw him pluck the ball out of the air mid-jump and complete the catch to pick up the wicket of the dangerous Ross Taylor.

Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians) – 2014

Kieron Pollard completed one of the best catches in Indian Premier League history against Rajasthan Royals on 19th May 2014. Kevon Cooper decided to take Harbhajan Singh on and tried to hit the ball down the ground for a six. It looked like he had gotten hold of the ball, and it would fly over the fielder for a six, but Pollard had other ideas. He jumped upwards and stretched his right hand, catching the ball with his fingertips.

However, the work was not yet done. While falling downwards, Pollard was facing the boundary, and the momentum of his jump was bound to take him over the rope, which would result in a six. However, Pollard’s quick thinking helped avoid this situation. He threw the ball backward before crossing the boundary, quickly turned around after crossing, and re-entered the field of play before diving to complete an absolute blinder of a catch.

Dwayne Bravo (Chennai Super Kings) – 2015

Dwayne Bravo won the 2015 IPL Catch of the Season award. His catch against Rajasthan Royals on 10th May 2015 was deemed to be the best one in the entirety of the 2015 season. In the 10th over, Shane Watson decided to go for the big shot against Ravindra Jadeja. Dwayne Bravo pulled off an absolute stunner to prevent the ball from crossing the boundary rope. With his outstretched right hand, he managed to clutch the ball with his fingertips and managed to remain just inside the boundary line, completing the catch and sending Shane Watson packing.

Suresh Raina (Gujarat Lions) – 2016

Suresh Raina won the IPL 2016 Catch of the Season award for his stupendous catch against Kolkata Knight Riders on 8th May 2016. Raina was fielding at 1st slip when he made a brilliant catch to pick up Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket. Dwayne Smith bowled the final over the powerplay. Suryakumar Yadav tried to go over and above the slip and the keeper, and it looked like he had gotten enough distance on his shot. However, Raina leaped to his left and simultaneously snatched the ball from the air with his right hand, completing one of the most bizarre catches in IPL history.

In 2017, Suresh Raina became the only player to win the IPL Catch of the Season award in back-to-back seasons. In a repeat of last year’s winner, Raina bagged the award from the 1st slip position once again. This time, he helped pick up Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket in a match against Rising Pune Supergiant on 14th April 2017. Praveen Kumar managed to get the outside edge of Rahane’s bat. Raina’s brilliant athleticism made sure that the ball did not go through between him and the keeper. He instinctively put out his left arm and caught the fast-traveling ball to pick up Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket.

Trent Boult (Delhi Capitals) – 2018

Trent Boult’s catch against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 8th May 2016 is arguably one of the best catches in Indian Premier League history. Virat Kohli decided to flick Harshal Patel for a six on the last ball of the 11th over. Boult initially misjudged the trajectory of the ball, which almost made him drop the catch. However, he recovered miraculously, stretching upwards and backward at the same time with his right hand pushed out. He caught the ball, but the catch had not yet been completed.

His backward momentum took him towards the boundary. He could see the rope come closer and closer to him. His lands landed just inside the rope, but it looked like the momentum would still be too much for Boult to handle. However, he managed to push all his body weight away from the boundary line and managed to stop himself completely almost instantly. He completed the catch and picked up Virat Kohli’s wicket with his hands just inches away from the boundary rope.

Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians) – 2019

Kieron Pollard is the only other player apart from Suresh Raina to have won multiple IPL Catch of the Season awards. Pollard won his second award for his catch on 3rd April 2019 against Chennai Super Kings. Suresh Raina decided to try and smash Jason Behrendorff on the offside in the final ball of the 5th over. Pollard was off the boundary rope, and the ball nearly sailed over him. The tall man, however, stretched out his right hand, caught the ball, and tumbled backward without touching the boundary rope to complete this audacious catch.

Ravi Bishnoi took an absolute stunner of a catch during his time with the Punjab Kings. This helped him win the IPL 2021 Catch of the Season award. Bishnoi took this catch against Kolkata Knight Riders on 26th April 2021. Narine decided to go after Arshdeep Singh in the final ball of the 3rd over. Narine did not connect perfectly, but it looked like the ball would fall between two fielders as the power play was still on. Ravi Bishnoi, however, had a different idea.

He covered up an unbelievable amount of ground, chasing after the ball. Despite his efforts, it looked like he would not be able to reach there in time. This is when Bishnoi decided to dive towards the ball while sprinting at full speed. He leaped in the air, putting both his hands together in a cupping action. The balls seemed to reward his efforts and landed perfectly into Bishnoi’s hands, making this one of the best catches in IPL history.

Evin Lewis (Lucknow Super Giants) – 2022

Evin Lewis picked up one of the best catches in IPL history at what can be said was the most crucial part of the game. Marcus Stoinis was picked to bowl the 20th over for Lucknow Super Giants against Kolkata Knight Riders on 18th May 2022. He had to protect 21 runs, a fairly easy task. However, Rinku Singh hit 18 runs in the first four balls. With Rinku Singh looking in immaculate form and three runs being needed in two balls, it looked like all was lost for LSG.

Rinku Singh cut the fifth ball in the air, and it looked like it would fall safely. Evin Lewis, however, had other ideas. He closed the gap and stretched out his left hand while falling down. His fingers managed to clutch the ball at the last second, and he completed the catch to send Rinku Singh packing. This forced Umesh Yadav to come in to face the last ball. Marcus Stoinis was able to get him clean bowled to help LSG win by two runs.

Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans) – 2023

Rashid Khan won the IPL 2023 Catch of the Season award for his brilliant effort against Lucknow Super Giants. Kyle Mayers was in amazing form and was punishing the Gujarat Titans bowlers all around the stadium. In the ninth over, he tried pulling Mohit Sharma over to the leg side. Rashid Khan saw an opportunity and came running in. It looked like he had misjudged the placement of the ball, but at the last second, he dived to his right with both while running at full speed. He was able to cup the ball in his hand and complete the catch to pick up the wicket of Mayers.
