IPL 2018: Rajasthan Royals win on Pink Day

You generally see teams playing better when they are playing for a bigger cause, an example being South Africa never having lost a cricket match till date, when they play in Pink, for supporting and spreading awareness about breast cancer. Yesterday, Rajasthan Royals wore pink for the first time ever, for a similar cause. The outcome? They beat Chennai Super Kings!

MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first, with Shane Watson giving the team a good start, as usual. Suresh Raina’s 52 was the highest score of the innings but once he was dismissed, the scoring rate dropped slightly, and Chennai managed a total of 176/4. This was slightly over par for this pitch in Jaipur.

MSD played another good hand of 33(23)* and had another ‘not out’ to his name, taking his season’s tally to 7 and taking his average up to an unbelievable 98.25. Now, it was all up to his bowlers to bowl well and defend this total, but Chennai’s main worry this season has been their bowling.

They would’ve been looking at getting the main wicket of Jos Buttler who had 3 consecutive fifties ever since being promoted to the top of the order but while they kept picking up wickets at the other end, Buttler went on to score his fourth consecutive fifty this season.

Because of wickets falling at the other end, the equation was getting close with 28 runs needed in the last couple of overs. Dhoni threw the ball to David Willey, who conceded 16 runs in the 19th over and it wasn’t Buttler who caused the damage, but Krishnappa Gowtham, who played a match-winning cameo of 13 in just 4 balls.

Needing 8 runs in the last 3 balls, Buttler smashed Dwayne Bravo into the stands over mid-wicket which confirmed an RR victory. They had a chance of bowling to Jofra Archer and getting a tie and super over, but an unnecessary aim at the stumps from Watson led to overthrows. RR got home with a ball to spare and Buttler finished on 95*. Man of the Match: Jos Buttler.
