IPL 2018: Mumbai Indians still not out of IPL 2018

The dream is still alive for Mumbai Indians fans, as they beat Punjab quite easily last night.

Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first, as the trend has been so far this season. The Kings XI Punjab opening pair of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul put up their fifth consecutive 50-run opening stand, but once they were dismissed, it was all downhill for Punjab.

Gayle’s 50(40) remained the top score for the innings, while Marcus Stoinis’ big hits towards the end took Punjab to a respectable score of 174/6. They were playing after a week of vacation and would’ve been refreshed, but Mumbai just seemed to be better on the day.

The usual opening pair of Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav walked out and Yadav’s good form continued, while a couple of wickets fell around him. He was eventually dismissed for 57 and Punjab had taken the game deeper than they would’ve imagined, with the only problem being Mumbai having a lot of wickets in hand.

Krunal Pandya and Rohit Sharma then got together when the score was at 120/4. They needed 55 in 27 at that stage and while Rohit was busy budging the ball around, Krunal was playing an absolute blinder, ending at 31(12)*. 4 sixes and 5 fours among the two meant MI got over the line with a complete over to spare!

Once again, it was the 17-year old Mujeeb Zadran who picked 2 wickets and was the best bowler for KXIP, but it clearly wasn’t enough. They’ve lost their last two games now and have slipped to the fourth place on the points table, while Mumbai’s hopes are still alive in IPL 2018. Man of the Match: Suryakumar Yadav.
