Mumbai Indians seem to be making a habit of losing their first few matches each year in the Indian Premier League. This season too, they started their campaign against Chennai Super Kings at home, losing a match that they should’ve won 9 times out of 10. CSK won that game by 1 wicket!
It was déjà vu last night for the Mumbai franchise, losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 1 wicket as well. Once again, the team batting second won the match – it’s become a trend in IPL 2018 so far. Kane Williamson won the toss for SRH and there was no hesitation before electing to field first.
He had some of the best bowlers in the league, even though Sandeep Sharma came in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar who had a sore back. With bowlers such as Sharma, Billy Stanlake, Rashid Khan, Shakib al Hasan and Siddarth Kaul in their arsenal, reaching even 150 would’ve been tough for Mumbai.
Evin Lewis showed promise at the top, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes to reach 29(17) before Kaul hit timber and dismissed Lewis. Similarly, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard also got starts but both were dismissed for 28 each, leaving Mumbai at just 147/8 in their 20 overs. Just like their last game, all the SRH bowlers were among the wickets.
The chase seemed to be a walk in the park for SRH when Dhawan and Saha put up an opening partnership of 62 and the required rate dropped below 6. The innings was just moving along when SRH had a sudden period of panic which saw them slipping from 136/5 to 137/9. They were left with 11 runs to get off the last over.
Deepak Hooda was still out there, and he started the over with a massive six that brought them back into the game. They ran a couple of singles and ultimately needed just one off the final ball, with Cutting bowling to the #11 batsman, Stanlake. He hit it over the infield and SRH completed their second consecutive win, which took them to the top of the table! Man of the Match: Rashid Khan
