IPL 2018: Kolkata Jinx Against Mumbai Continues

Kolkata Knight Riders have always been a champion side in the Indian Premier League and coming into IPL 2018, they were one of the pre-tournament favourites. However, they had to play Mumbai Indians last night and keeping everything else aside, they hadn’t beaten Mumbai since 8th April 2015. The two has played 7 games since then, all won by Mumbai.

Kolkata won the toss and elected to field first at the Eden Gardens, but it turned out to be a good toss to lose for Rohit Sharma, as the pitch seemed to be a good one for the batsmen and all of the seven MI batsmen who walked out to bat, hit at least one boundary and 6 of them hit at least one six.

The innings was moving along at an average rate until the 19-year old Ishan Kishan walked in the bat and completely changed the course of the game. It was the 14th over of the innings when the wicket-keeper batsman launched four sixes off four balls against Kuldeep Yadav, including completing his fifty in just 17 balls!

He continued hitting in the next over when he deposited Sunil Narine out of the ground but was caught on the boundary the next ball, getting a little too greedy. His 62(21) had turned the game in Mumbai’s favour and some sixes from the Pandya brothers and Ben Cutting at the end took Mumbai to a commanding total of 210/6. Piyush Chawla bowled brilliantly but a horrible last over ruined his figures – 3/48.

Chasing 200+ is never easy in a T20 and losing early wickets only makes it worse. Narine was out trying to pull a short ball from McClenaghan on just the second ball of the KKR innings, while Lynn, Uthappa, Russell and all the other batsmen quickly followed. It was a classic collapse that we often see when there is scoreboard pressure and KKR were bundled out for 108 in the 19th over.

The Pandya brothers were the pick of the bowlers, picking up 2 wickets each as this 102-run loss became Kolkata’s worst ever in the IPL. With this win, Mumbai completed three successive victories and entered the top four for the first time in IPL 2018. They have also strengthened their chances of qualifying by boosting their Net Run Rate last night. Man of the Match: Ishan Kishan.
