Inter Milan’s Top 10 Most Expensive Signings

Inter Milan is one of the biggest and most prestigious clubs in the world and has seen some of the best players in the world play for them. However, Inter Milan is not really known for overspending and tries to sign talented stars at an affordable price instead of overpaying for a particular transfer target, which is why most of their transfer fees are not exuberant at all. However, despite this, they have managed to sign some incredible players in their long history. This article talks about the 10 most expensive signings in Inter Milan’s history.

Who Are Inter Milan’s Most Expensive Signings?

10. Alessandro Bastoni – €31.1 Million

Alessandro Bastoni is an Italian professional footballer who transferred from Atalanta to Inter Milan in the summer of 2017. He played for Atalanta’s youth academy from 2006 to 2016 before being promoted to the first team. After impressing with the main squad, Inter Milan decided to sign the talented defender, paying €31.1 Million to do so, and he has continued to play for Inter Milan since then. He did spend the 2017/18 season on loan at Atalanta and the 2018/19 season on loan at Parma, but Bastoni has now become one of Inter Milan’s key players and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world as of now.

Nicolo Barella first came into the spotlight while representing the Italian side of Cagliari, but it was while playing for Inter Milan that he really made a name for himself. He graduated from Cagliari’s youth academy and continued to shine for the first team. His performances caught the eye of Inter Milan, who originally decided to sign him on loan in the 2019.20 season. After Barella did very well for them and seemed to be the perfect fit for Inter, the club decided to sign him on a permanent basis ahead of the 2020/21 season for €32.5 Million, and Barella has since continued to represent the Italian side.

8. Milan Skriniar – €34 Million

Milan Skriniar has played for multiple teams around the world, but he is most well-known for his time at Inter Milan. He first came into the spotlight while representing the Italian side Sampdoria and Inter Milan. Impressed by his skills, he decided to make a move for him. They completed the signing on 7th July 2017, paying Sampdoria a transfer fee of €34 Million to do so. Milan Skriniar ended up playing for Inter from 2017 to 2023, representing them in six different seasons and making a total of 246 appearances across all competitions before deciding to leave the club and move to French side Paris Saint-Germain.

7. Geoffrey Kondogbia – €36 Million

Geoffrey Kondogbia is a French professional footballer who chose to represent the Central African Republic football team on the international stage. He is known for his brilliant skills in the centre of the field and has played for various clubs, including the likes of Lens, Sevilla, Monaco, Atletico Madrid and Marseille. Kondogbia also played for Inter Milan, who decided to sign him after his stint with AS Monaco. Inter paid the French club €36 Million to bring Kondogbia to Italy ahead of the 2015/16 season. Kondogbia ended up playing for Inter Milan from 2015 to 2018 before leaving the club.

6. Radja Nainggolan – €38 Million

Radja Nainggolan has played for multiple Italian clubs throughout his career, with one of them being Inter Milan. The Belgian midfielder played for various clubs like Cagliari, AS Roma, and Antwerp during his career and while he spent a lot of his career playing for Cagliari and AS Roma, his stint at Inter Milan is not something that should be overlooked. Impressed by his performance at Roma, Inter decided to sign the talented midfielder, paying a transfer fee of €38 Million to do so. Nainggolan spent quite some time during his time at Inter on loan and ended up making just 41 appearances for them across all competitions.

5. Hernan Crespo – €40 Million

Hernan Crespo was an Argentine professional footballer who played as a striker throughout his career. He played for various clubs during his time in the club, including the likes of River Plate, Parma, Lazio, Inter Milan, Chelsea, and AC Milan. Crespo had two different stints with Inter Milan, but it was during his first stint that the Italian club paid a transfer fee of €40 Million to sign the talented striker. Inter signed the Argentine star from Lazio ahead of the 2002/03 season but decided to sell him to Chelsea after just one season. The deal for Crespo included a transfer fee, and Bernardo Corradi joined Lazio.

4. Achraf Hakimi – €43 Million

Achraf Hakimi is regarded as one of the best fullbacks in the world. He has played for just four teams in his career, namely Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. While Hakimi’s stint at Inter Milan was a very short one, and he left after just one season, this was a very important stop in his career. Inter paid Real Madrid a transfer fee of €43 Million to bring Hakimi to Italy, and his performance at the club attracted attention from some of the biggest clubs in the world. PSG came calling after just one season and agreed to a package worth €71 Million, which is why Inter agreed to sell him.

3. Joao Mario – €44.8 Million

Joao Mario is a Portuguese professional footballer who has played as a midfielder throughout his career. His career started at Sporting, but after various successful spells, Inter Milan decided to make a move for the talented star. The Italian club decided to make a move ahead of the 2016/17 season and agreed to pay a transfer fee of €44.8 Million to sign the Portuguese midfielder. Joao Mario ended up staying at Inter Milan from 2016 to 2021 but spent half of his five seasons on loan at West Ham United, Lokomotiv Moscow, and Sporting CP. Mario ended up making a total of 69 appearances for Inter before leaving in 2021.

2. Christian Vieri – €46.5 Million

Christian Vieri was an Italian professional striker who played football from 1991 to 2009. He played for a plethora of clubs during his career, including Atalanta, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, AC Milan, and AS Monaco. However, the most time he spent at a single club was when he played for Inter Milan. The Italian club paid Lazio a transfer fee worth €46.5 Million to sign the talented striker ahead of the 1999/00 season. He ended up staying at the club from 1999 to 2005 and represented them in six different seasons, making 190 appearances for Inter Milan across all competitions before moving to archrivals AC Milan.

Romelu Lukaku is a Belgian professional footballer who has played for some very prestigious clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, AS Roma, and Napoli. While he was criticized for various aspects, like his first touch, Lukaku was still an incredible goal scorer, which is reflected in his record for whichever clubs he has played for. He is also the highest goal-scorer in Belgium’s history. Inter paid Manchester United a huge transfer fee of €74 Million to sign Lukaku ahead of the 2019/20 season. This makes Romelu Lukaku the most expensive transfer in Inter Milan’s history.
