Rohit Sharma led team India recently played their 1000th game against West Indies on 8th February 2022 and won that game convincingly by six wickets. Here are the former Indian captains who led men in blue in their landmark games.
Kapil Dev made his captaincy debut in 1982-83 seasons against Sri Lanka when the little master Sunil Gavaskar was rested for that tour. Dev’s most significant assignment was against the oversized West Indies, and he was appointed as the regular captain for the time. This propelled him to win their only game against the West Indies.
Victory against West Indies gave a boost to Dev’s confidence as captain, who eventually led the side in 1983’s Prudential World Cup which we won against the West Indies on 25th July and made a break against them by winning three World Cups on the trot. This World Cup winning captain also led India to their 100th national game ODI against Australia, which came in a defeat.
The current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly led India during its 500th national game and the historic game against, England which ended as a no result. After Sachin Tendulkar left the captaincy, Sourav Ganguly was appointed as India’s new captain. This was a first when India’s mindset and approach was changed.
Ganguly led the Indian side for the finals in ICC Champions Trophy in 2000 (which was formerly known as ICC Knockout Trophy), which came in defeat against New Zealand. Since then, Ganguly led the team to play two ICC finals in 2002 and 2003 against Sri Lanka and Australia none of which we won. Ganguly’s captaincy changed the dynamics of the Indian cricket team to win more abroad, especially in Test format.

MS Dhoni was selected as the Indian captain in the 2007 World T20. After that historic win in the competition, Dhoni was also elected as India’s full-time ODI captain. Since 2007, he has led India in all three formats and became the only captain to win T20 WC, ODI WC, Champions Trophy, and also received ICC Test Mace.
No doubt why he was termed as one of the successful captains of India. Ms. also led India to the historic 800th game against Australia in 2012, which came in a defeat.
Rohit Sharma led the Indian side became the first team to play the 1000th game in the history of world cricket. India played their 1000th game recently against West Indies in Ahmedabad and won the match by six wickets while chasing a poultry target of 177.
After Virat Kohli has been sacked from the ODI captaincy for the Indian Team, Rohit Sharma was the automatic choice for India’s next Captain. Rohit Sharma is relatively new in the captaincy career for Team India only led 13 matches in ODI format, out of which India has won 11 matches. Team India is witnessing as him a true leader who can break the thirst of winning ICC events since 2014.
The above-mentioned captain is indeed a gem that BCCI had produced. Talking about a few of their achievement, it is interesting to know that MS Dhoni is the only Captain in the world to win 8 Titles, including Franchise and International Titles (4 IPL Titles, two champions league, 1 World T20, and 1 Asia T20). On the other hand, Rohit Sharma is the second captain to win 7 Titles only behind MS Dhoni, including Franchise and International Titles (5 IPL Titles, two champions leagues).
