IND vs AUS Live Updates, WTC Final 2023, Match Details and Everything You Need To Know

18:10 PM: India loses WTC 2023 title to Australia

India’s quest for an ICC title remains unfulfilled as they suffered a defeat by a margin of 209 runs against Pat Cummins-led Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval on Sunday. Australia dominated the game from Day 1, with Travis Head and Steve Smith scoring a century each to take their team to a commanding total of 469 runs in the first innings. Despite Ajinkya Rahane’s gritty 89, India failed to avoid the follow-on, but managed to show some resistance in the second innings.

However, a solid 93-run partnership between Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc helped Australia set a target of 444 runs. India made a decent start on Day 4, reaching 164/3 by the end of the day, but lost quick wickets on the final day. Scott Boland dismissed Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the same over, while Rahane and Shardul Thakur failed to make significant contributions. Eventually, Nathan Lyon’s final wicket sealed the victory for Australia.

16:40 PM: Ajinkya Rahane completes his half-century!

Ajinkya Rahane marked his comeback to the Indian Test team with a courageous fifty against Australia in the World Test Championship final at the Oval. Despite the Indian top-order collapsing against the formidable Australian pace attack, Rahane fought a solitary battle with the bat and achieved his 26th Test fifty by hitting a boundary and a six off Pat Cummins.

Despite a difficult start with the bat, India found some solace as Ajinkya Rahane showcased his tenacity and scored fifty under challenging conditions at the Oval. The team had suffered an early setback with the loss of KS Bharat on the second ball of the day, as the Australian pace attack continued to dominate.

14:26 PM: WTC 2023 Final: Will Day 3 Be The End Of India’s ICC Title Hopes?

Quick Recap of Day 1:

On the first day of the World Test Championship, Travis Head and Steve Smith made an incredible comeback by taking their team’s score from 76 for 3 to 327 for 3 by the end of the day’s play. Head remained unbeaten on 146 runs, while Smith was just short of his century at 95 not out, as the pair formed an unbeaten partnership of 251 runs for the fourth wicket.

In the ICC WTC 2023 Final between India and Australia, the first session saw a promising beginning for India as Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur claimed early wickets. Siraj dismissed Usman Khawaja in his second over, while Shardul took down Warner.

After the lunch break, Shami managed to take wicket of Labuschagne. Although Warner seemed to pose a threat, he directed his aggression towards Umesh Yadav, and unfortunately, Khawaja was dismissed without contributing to the score.

Quick Recap of Day 2:

During the World Test Championship final at the Oval on Thursday, India’s top order quickly crumbled after Australia was bowled out for 469 at the end of the second day’s play. Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were both dismissed in just five balls, leaving India at 37-2 during tea.

The trend continued with Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara also getting out. As India’s score fell to 71-4, things looked bleak for the team. However, Ravindra Jadeja mounted a defiant counterattack to try and turn things around.

Just before the close, Nathan Lyon managed to dismiss him, reasserting Australia’s control over the game. With India still trailing by 318 runs, Ajinkya Rahane (on 29) and KS Bharat (on 5) remained at the crease.

Day 3: What can be the best route ahead for today?

Following Jadeja’s dismissal, India’s position on the ground was severely weakened, leaving Rahane to strive towards avoiding the follow-on. To do so, India must achieve a score of 270 runs, which is 199 runs less than Australia’s first innings total of 469.

As of now, India had scored 151 for five wickets in 38 overs with Rahane and KS Bharat at the crease. If India fails to avoid the follow-on, it will require a miracle to win the title. Bharat, the last batsman in the batting line, will aim to preserve India’s wickets, while Rahane will take a slow and steady approach while still making big shots..

12:18 PM: WTC 2023 Final: AB De Villiers Lauds Rahane Amidst India’s Top Order Failure

Australia’s bigger run size on Day 2 saw team Indias experiencing chills throughout their innings. The Indian top order struggled on a pivotal day of the Test match, with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli failing to make a significant impact. As a result, Australia gained a strong advantage in the match.

With India’s chances of winning the World Test Championship final (WTC 2023) appearing bleak, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja stepped up to the fiasco and rescued the team by forming a valuable 71-run partnership. Jadeja, an alone batsman who performed admirably in comparison to his teammates, scored 48 runs before being removed by Nathan Lyon.

Rahane showed great resilience on his return to the Test side after being dropped in early 2022. Having displayed scintillating form for CSK in the IPL, he brought that confidence with him to The Oval and was determined to leave his mark.

Rahane, currently on 29 runs, was initially given out LBW to Pat Cummins’ delivery, but upon review, it was revealed that the pacer had crossed the line. India, having already lost half their team with only 151 runs on the board, now have a challenging task ahead of them in the next three days.

AB de Villiers recently tweeted some encouraging words for Ajinkya Rahane, who is carrying the hopes of India on his shoulders in the World Test Championship final. According to de Villiers, Rahane’s technique is solid and he is playing with great finesse. Additionally, he noted that he has never seen Rahane move so well before.

On Day 1, Australia faced a setback when they lost three wickets, but Steven Smith and Travis Head turned things around by creating a formidable partnership of 285 runs, showcasing their impressive batting skills.

The Australian bowlers, including Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Cameron Green, and Nathan Lyon, have demonstrated their impressive skills by picking up one wicket each and aiming to restrict India’s innings to under 200 runs.

18:47 PM: Australia’s game comes to an end!

The last wicket of Pat Cummins ended Australia’s innings with 469 runs. Now, it is India’s turn to give a solid fight to the Aussie side without losing wickets.

18:20 PM: Alex Carey gone

Ravindra Jadega has taken his first wicket of the series. Alex Carey was sent back to the pavilion after losing his wicket on a leg before wicket (lbw).

18:01 PM: Team Indian is in huge trouble!

Shami leaking runs is something Sharma as a captain would have never expected! The Australians are seven down and India need three more wickets to bounce back in the WTC finals! It seems like all the Indian bowlers are facing lack or morale, that they use to get during Kohli’s captaincy! Correct me if I am wrong!

16:40 PM: Mitchell Starc run out!

Starc has faced a runout after scoring only five runs. He has just started his inning, and Axal Patel sends him out of the game.

Scorecard: Australia: 402/7 in 104 overs

16:12 PM: Steven Smith also loses his wicket!

After the wickets of Head, Green, and eventually Smith, India was relieved when Shardul Thakur bowled Australia’s second best hitter.

15:51 PM: Cameron Green dismissed!

Shami’s solid performance today speaks volumes for him. He removed Cameron Green with his second delivery of the 95th over.

15:31 PM: And a major batter left the ground!

Siraj bowled it perfectly in 91 over by spelling short ball, and Travis Head gave a catch to wicket-keeper.

15:19 PM: Day 2 begins!

Smith and David are leading the game strongly with Head crossing 150 runs, and Smith has also completed his century.

17:49 PM IST: Shami sends back Marnus Labuschagne!

Australia’s one more top batsman was sent back to sets before he even thought of it. Labuschagne got bowled out, and with this, his innings came to a close at 26 runs in 62 balls.

16:54 PM IST: David Warner is out!

This wicket comes as a big blow to Australians as David Warner loses his wicket to Shardul Thakur. The left-handed batsman was about to complete his half-century but unfortunately walked back to the pavilion with just 43 runs in 60 balls.

15:23 PM IST: 10 overs complete!

Siraj is going heavy on Australians! At the end of 10 overs, Australia had scored 22 runs while losing one wicket.

15:13 PM IST: First Blood For Team India

Indeed one of the best red ball cricketer out there, Siraj has proved his worth again here at the Oval against the Australian! What a ball to dismiss Usman Khawaja!

IND vs AUS: UPDATED LIST OF TEAM INDIA’S SQUAD

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final is just two days away, and the BCCI has made a few changes to Team India’s squad against Australia.

With the majority of its players in form, Team India is ready to put up a fight in this series. Winning this series will be a top priority for the team in order to break the team’s decade-long gap of winning the ICC crown. Since winning the Champions Trophy against England in 2013, India has not won an ICC title.

Despite having strong players in Rohit Sharma’s squad, the absence of top players like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah creates a void. Former vice captain Ajinkya Rahane makes a comeback in the final 15 for the BCCI, while Suryakumar Yadav is on the standby player list.

Because Rahane is returning to the Test series after a year away, this will be an important opportunity for him to demonstrate his skills on the pitch. His most recent Test series was against South Africa in January 2022. Rahane was seen in strong form this year in the Ranji Trophy tournaments, when he scored 634 in seven matches, and he also had a fantastic IPL season.

Ishan Kishan was previously dropped from the squad list for the WTC final, but with KL Rahul’s injury, he found himself in the top 15 players list. Shardul Thakur, a pace bowling all-rounder, was also named to the main list of 15 players.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was nominated as a backup player along with Suryakumar Yadav and bowler Mukesh Kumar, however the Indian batter had to withdraw due to his wedding. As a backup player, Yashasvi Jaiswal replaced him in the team.

TEAM INDIA SQUAD

Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat.

Reserve players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar, Suryakumar Yadav.

The Kennington Oval has hosted the highest number of test matches. Despite being a high-scoring ground, the bowlers still have enough opportunities to showcase their skills. The unpredictable weather conditions in England make it difficult to predict whether the batsmen or the bowlers will dominate. Therefore, the pitch offers assistance to both parties, making the toss result critical.
