ICC ODI World Cup: List Of Winners: The ICC Cricket World Cup continues to remain one of the most highly significant sporting events across the world. Cricket fans from all over the globe wait for the contest, with teams across continents battling for the coveted trophy. The 2023 ODI World Cup is all set to be played this year in India, with many fans already looking forward to watching all the top teams compete for glory.

The first ODI World Cup took place in 1975 in England and was played with 60 overs per side. It was held outside England for the first time in 1987, when India and Pakistan co-hosted the event, with the number of overs per side also dropping to 50.

Australia is the most successful country in the ODI World Cup history, having won the tournament six times. Back in 2007, they also became the first team to win three World Cups on the trot. Apart from Australia, India & West Indies are the other two countries that have won the World Cup multiple times.

While West Indies won the first two editions of the ICC ODI World Cup, India’s first victory came in the year 1983, with the latest win taking place on home turf in 2011! While Sri Lanka and Pakistan have won the World Cup once, New Zealand remains to be a team that has been one of the most formidable cricket sides but never won any ICC Cricket World Cup.

List of All ICC ODI World Cup Winner List 

West Indies – 1975

The first-ever ICC ODI World Cup was won by the West Indies in 1975. The Caribbean side, led by Clive Lloyd, defeated Australia by 17 runs in the final held at Lord’s. Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, and Andy Roberts played crucial roles in helping their team lift the trophy.

West Indies – 1979

The West Indies made it back-to-back World Cup wins in 1979, this time defeating England by 92 runs in the final. The Windies were the dominant force in cricket then, and their pace attack, led by Joel Garner and Colin Croft, proved too much for the English batters.

India – 1983

The 1983 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in cricket history. India considered minnows then, stunned the cricketing world by defeating the mighty West Indies in the final. Kapil Dev’s all-around heroics and Mohinder Amarnath’s player-of-the-match performance helped India clinch their first-ever World Cup.

Australia – 1987

The 1987 World Cup saw the introduction of coloured clothing and day-night matches. It was also the first time that the tournament was held outside England. Australia, led by Allan Border, defeated England by seven runs in a closely contested final held at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.

Pakistan – 1992

The 1992 World Cup was a fairy tale for Pakistan. The team had a poor start to the tournament, winning just one of their first five matches. However, they bounced back in style, winning their next five matches to reach the final. Led by Imran Khan, Pakistan defeated England by 22 runs in the final held at Melbourne.

Sri Lanka – 1996

The 1996 World Cup saw Sri Lanka announce themselves on the world stage. The team, led by Arjuna Ranatunga, played an aggressive brand of cricket and was unbeaten throughout the tournament. In the final held at Lahore, Sri Lanka defeated Australia by seven wickets to win their first-ever World Cup.

Australia – 1999

The 1999 World Cup saw Australia start their era of dominance in cricket. The team, led by Steve Waugh, defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the final held at Lord’s. Shane Warne’s player-of-the-match performance and Glenn McGrath’s miserly bowling helped Australia lift the trophy.

Australia – 2003

The 2003 World Cup saw Australia continue their winning streak in the tournament. Ricky Ponting led the team and was too good for the rest of the competition. In the final held at Johannesburg, Australia defeated India by 125 runs to lift their third World Cup.

Australia – 2007

The 2007 World Cup was a forgettable tournament for most teams, but not for Australia. The team, led by Ponting, was unbeatable throughout the competition, winning all their matches convincingly. In the final held at Bridgetown, Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs to lift their fourth World Cup.

India – 2011

The 2011 World Cup was a special tournament for India. The team, led by MS Dhoni, weighted a billion expectations on their shoulders. However, they delivered in style, easily winning their matches to reach the final. In the final held at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to win their second World Cup.

Australia – 2015

The 2015 World Cup saw Australia continue their dominance in the tournament. The team, led by Michael Clarke, was simply too good for the rest of the competition. In the final held at Melbourne, Australia defeated New Zealand by seven wickets to lift their fifth World Cup.

England – 2019

The 2019 World Cup was a closely contested tournament, with several teams in the running for the trophy. However, England emerged victorious, defeating New Zealand in a thrilling final held at Lord’s. The match ended in a tie, but England was declared the winner based on the boundary count rule.

Australia- 2023

The 2023 World Cup was a tournament to remember for Australia. Led by Pat Cummins, the Aussies started off in the group stages poorly losing two games but managed to bounce back strong. After getting the better of South Africa in the semi finals, they locked horned against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Australia restricted the hosts  to a small total of 240 but were reduced to 47/3, citing a couple of dangerous spells from the Indian seamers. However, Travis Head engineered a match-winning partnership with Marnus Labuschagne as the 192-run stand saw Australia defeat the Men in Blue by 6 wickets to lift the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

There have been 13 editions of the tournament being played so far with Australia being is the latest winner of the ODI World Cup, having won it in 2023. The next edition of the ODI World Cup is all set to be played in 2027 with South Africa and Zimbabwe co-hosting the ICC event. 

While its still a long way to go, the likes of India, England and Australia and New Zealand always start the ICC tournaments as favorites. With the event all set to played on the continent of Africa, the Proteas will look to take advantage of the home conditions and look to finally win an ICC tournament.
