ICC Media Rights Auction Process Questioned by Broadcasters

Indian broadcasters has expressed their displeasure with the upcoming media rights auction process of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The apex cricket governing body in the world is all set to accept tender offers for their media rights for broadcasting of international cricket events. It includes tournaments like the ICC World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy for both the men’s as well as the women’s teams.

Reports suggest that four Indian broadcasters have addressed the ICC and criticized their e-auction process. According to a report in ET, four broadcasters namely Disney Star, Sony Pictures Networks (SPN), Viacom18 and Zee Entertainment are concerned over the “lack of transparency” in the upcoming media rights auction process set by ICC.

Broadcasters raise issues to ICC

Reports state that SPN has addressed a letter to the ICC regarding the media rights auction process. The potential bidders from India have raised four major red flags of the auction. They have claimed that top tier management executives from the abovementioned firms want to clear up thoughts in few topics which are:

  1. a) bid submission and the three-week gap before the Winners’ Announcement
  2. c) the requirement for a 5% down payment upfront.
  3. c) Clarity on multiplier formula for four-year bids versus eight-year bids

An un-named top tier management official from a television network has been quoted by Cricket Addictor saying, “To conduct a sealed bid auction and then hold off for three weeks is unheard of in the modern world. Why should they have my financial offer for three weeks?” The network official also went on to add how ICC can gather all the directors at a single venue and begin the bid opening.

The broadcasters are also said to have the International Cricket Council to follow in the footsteps of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). They wish to see the ICC follow a strategy that allows transparent e-auctions, just like the Indian cricket board did during their broadcast rights auctions a few months ago.

The reports further go on to add that ICC Is hoping to get all the bids being submitted by the third week of August. The approvals will be shared across by the first week of September after discussions and developed recommendations from the board.
