Highest Successful Run Chases In IPL History

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of if not the best domestic leagues in the world. T20 cricket has become more and more aggressive over the years which has resulted in some huge targets being set. Some of these targets have been successfully chased down over the years. This article talks about some of the biggest run chases in IPL history. The game has gotten incredibly aggressive through the years which is why most of the chases on this list are very recent.

9. Lucknow Super Giants Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore (2023) – 213

The IPL game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants which took place on 10th April 2023 is one of the most exciting matches in the history of the league. RCB set a target of 213 for LSG to chase down. While it seemed impossible, brilliant batting by Marcus Stoinis, who made 65 runs in 30 balls, and Nicholas Pooran, who made 62 runs in 19 balls, helped them chase the target down and win the match. The match came down to the last ball with LSG needing one run in one ball with one wicket remaining and they managed to do it.

9. Mumbai Indians Vs Rajasthan Royals (2023) – 213

Another huge successful run chase in IPL history came on 30th April 2023 when Mumbai Indians faced Rajasthan Royals. RR batted first and set a huge target of 213 for MI. While it looked like an impossible task, a team effort by Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Tim David made it possible. They made 28, 44, 55, 29, and 45 runs respectively, helping Mumbai Indians win the game by six wickets with three balls left.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs Punjab Kings (2024) – 215

Punjab Kings set a mammoth total of 215 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 19th May 2024. It looked like it would be an impossible task but incredible displays by Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Heinrich Klaasen who made 66 in 28 balls, 33 in 18 balls, 37 in 25 balls and 42 in 26 balls respectively helped achieve this impossible task. SRH managed to win the game by four wickets with five balls remaining.

5. Mumbai Indians Vs Punjab Kings (2023) – 215

Mumbai Indians completed an emphatic win over Punjab Kings on 3rd May 2023 in the IPL. The home team set a target of 215 for Mumbai Indians to chase down. Many players contributed towards chasing this target down, but Ishan Kishan, who made 75 runs in 41 balls, and Suryakumar Yadav, who made 66 runs in 31 balls, were the standout performers. Their heroics made it possible for MI to chase down the target and win the game by six wickets with seven balls to spare.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs Rajasthan Royals (2023) – 215

The match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, which took place on 7th May 2023 was filled with drama. Rajasthan Royals set a target of 215 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad to chase and while performances by Anmolpreet Singh, Abhishk Sharma, Rahul Tripathi, Heinrich Klaasen, and Glenn Phillips got them very close, it looked like they had lost the match when Abdul Samad missed the last ball with five runs needed to win. However, the ball was deemed to be a no-ball, and with four required off the additional ball, Samad hit a six, handing SRH the win.

5. Rajasthan Royals Vs Deccan Chargers (2008) – 215

This IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers is the oldest game on this list by a margin. In a time where such high scores were not the norm, Deccan Chargers set a target of 215 for the Rajasthan Royals to chase down. However, incredible displays by Graeme Smith, Yusuf Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, and Shane Warne, who made 71, 61, 34, and 22 runs respectively, saw Rajasthan Royals turn the game upside down and win the game by three wickets with one ball remaining.

4. Mumbai Indians Vs Chennai Super Kings (2021) – 219

Mumbai Indians completed one of the biggest run chases in IPL history against Chennai Super Kings on 1st May 2021. CSK set a massive target of 219 for Mumbai Indians and it looked like the game was over but MI was not ready to give up yet. Quinton de Kock, Rohit Sharma, Krunal Pandya, and Hardik Pandya all contributed towards the win but the standout performance came by Kieron Pollard. The West Indian star pummelled 87 runs in just 34 balls and remained not out to guide MI to an ecstatic win over CSK.

2. Rajasthan Royals Vs Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) – 224

The game between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders on 16th April 2024 is the second-highest target chased down in IPL history. KKR set a target of 224 for RR to chase down and while it looked impossible, Jos Buttler’s amazing inning made it happen. While other players like Riyan Parag and Rovman Powell did well, Jos Buttler made 107 runs in 60 balls and remained not out to help Rajasthan Royals win against Kolkata Knight Riders by two wickets with no balls to spare.

2. Rajasthan Royals Vs Punjab Kings (2020) – 224

Rajasthan Royals’s chase against Punjab Kings on 27th September 2020 is tied for the second-highest run chase in IPL history. Punjab Kings set a target of 224 runs for RR to chase down. Three brilliant performances by Steve Smith (50 runs in 27 balls), Sanju Samson (85 runs in 42 balls), and Rahul Tewatia (53 runs in 31 balls) helped RR do the impossible. It looked like the game was over with 51 runs needed in two overs. However, Rahul Tewatia scored five sixes against Sheldon Cottrell, scoring 30 runs in the 19th over followed by Mohammed Shami conceding 23 runs in the last over, making Rajasthan Royals win the game.

1. Punjab Kings Vs Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) – 262

The biggest successful run chase in IPL history took place on 26th April 2024 in a game against Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. KKR set a target of 262 for the Punjab Kings to chase it. Not only did PBKS chase this down, but they made it look easy. Prabhsimran Singh (54 runs in 20 balls), Jonny Bairstow (108 runs in 48 balls), Rilee Rossouw (26 runs in 16 balls), and Shashank Singh (68 runs in 28 balls), managed to chase this humongous target in just 18.4 overs. Punjab Kings managed to win the game by eight wickets with eight balls to spare.
