Hardik Pandya took over captaincy of the Indian cricket team in the absence of Rohit Sharma for the last T20I match in the recently concluded white ball series against the West Indies. After taking over from India’s all format captain for the last game, Pandya oversaw the Men in Blues’ joint fourth-biggest victory, in terms of runs against the Caribbean outfit.
The Indian cricket team had so far seen over seven players captain the national team across various formats this year. Hardik Pandya, who last captained against Ireland was seen replacing Rishabh Pant as the Men in Blues’ vice-captain in the T20I format for the WI tour.
Speaking about Hardik Pandya’s rise amongst the leadership group, Rohit Sharma goes on to share how excited he is to have multiple leaders in the team. Speaking on Star Sports’ Follow the Blues show, the 35-year-old skipper said, “I know it’s very exciting to create so many leaders around the team because it’s always a good sign. And you want the guys to handle the pressure, who understand the game and know each other really well. And when they are leading the team, all these things can happen.”
He went on to add “I think it’s very important to have that leadership. But obviously, we play the IPL, and it’s a ten-team tournament. So, there will be ten captains who at some stage will be a part of the Indian team as well. I think it’s fantastic because honestly, my job is much lesser as these guys understand everything pretty well. So, it’s just about if someone’s having a thought, how am I going to back that up. For me as captain that is my role and that is what I’m trying to do.”

Hardik Pandya has now led India to three wins in the same number of matches he has played in as a stand-in captain. He shared how he is open to take up the role on a full-time basis in the future. Speaking about the same, the Indian allrounder was quoted by ESPNcricInfo saying, “Yeah! why not? If I get an opportunity in the future, I’ll be more than happy to do that, but right now we have the World Cup, and we have the Asia Cup [coming up].”
“We’re going to focus on that and make sure as a team what we’re doing, we continue [with that] and make sure that with all the skill sets, which we are learning we can keep getting better at it, and at the same point of time enjoy the game as well,” Hardik Pandya added.
