After scoring, players often celebrate to express joy, pride, or relief. But beyond that, celebrations have evolved into moments of entertainment, theatre, and even protest. While some players keep it simple by doing a simple fist bump or chest thump, others use humour to engage fans and leave a lasting impression. There have been many funny celebrations done by players through time, and this article talks about the 10 funniest goal celebrations performed in the history of football.

Bafetimbi Gomis had a signature celebration called the ‘Black Panther’, in which he would crawl across the ground to celebrate his goal. Gomis first introduced this celebration back when he was a Saint-Etienne player. This celebration was a tribute to Salif Keita, a legendary striker for Saint-Etienne who was nicknamed The Black Panther. Gomis celebrated by dropping to all fours and crawling like a panther in Swansea’s 2-1 win against Manchester United, and his celebration gained a lot of attention.
Emmanuel Adebayor provided an absolutely hilarious moment for every football fan apart from Arsenal fans in the game between Manchester City and Arsenal. After scoring in the 80th minute to more or less secure City’s victory, the former Arsenal star who had left the club on bitter terms sprinted the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the traveling Arsenal fans which made the crowd go ballistic. The fact that Emmanuel Adebayor had only just left Arsenal and transferred to Manchester City, and decided to do such an over-the-top celebration after helping City beat Arsenal, made this celebration one of the funniest moments of all time.
Lo’eau LaBonta of the Kansas City Current went viral with a brilliantly staged “hamstring injury” celebration. After scoring a goal via a penalty against Angel City, she clutched her leg as if injured, only to break into a perfect twerk seconds later. This part of the prank celebration was simply hilarious, and you could see her team and Lo’eau LaBonta herself start laughing after she pulled off this hilarious injury-twerk celebration.

At Euro 1996, England’s Paul Gascoigne scored a stunning solo goal against Scotland, then immediately dropped to the turf as teammates squirted water into his open mouth. This incident mimicked the famous ‘dentist’s chair’ incident, and Gazza’s celebration was a cheeky rebuttal to media criticism over that drinking scandal. Given that this was a game between bitter rivals, England and Scotland, at one of the biggest stages in world football, made the joke even funnier.
Robbie Fowler was accused of drug abuse by Everton fans, and the player decided to respond in an amazing and funny way. After scoring a goal against them in 1999’s Merseyside Derby, Robbie Fowler dropped to his knees in front of Everton fans and pretended to snort the goal line like it was a line of drugs. This sent the fans into outrage and led to a suspension for Fowler, but the dark joke hit perfectly after the player had been accused of drug use.

Icelandic club Stjarnan FC became a global sensation in 2010 with their elaborate, funny celebrations. After one goal, a player cast an imaginary fishing line; a teammate “bit” and flopped around like a hooked fish. The rest joined in, “reeling” him in and posing triumphantly. It was perfectly timed, well-rehearsed, and absurdly funny. Unlike most celebrations, it wasn’t about ego but pure team humour. This ‘Gone Finishing’ celebration is one of Stjarnan FC’s funny celebrations.

Peter Crouch’s robot dance stole the spotlight in a 2006 World Cup warm-up game between England and Jamaica. After scoring in England’s 6-0 win, Crouch broke into a stiff-limbed robot dance that looked awkwardly brilliant given his 6’7″ frame. It was goofy, charming, and instantly iconic, a refreshing contrast to the usual chest-thumping. The comedic timing and gangly limbs made it one of England’s most beloved celebration moments. Crouch also pulled this celebration out various other times, and it was a hit every single time he did it.

In a 2016 friendly against Spain, Jamie Vardy scored a trademark poacher’s goal and followed it with a hilarious “mannequin challenge.” As teammates froze mid-celebration, Vardy stood statue-still with a smirk on his face. It was a nod to the viral internet trend, and it worked perfectly on live TV. While the trend had become very famous with various people doing mannequin challenges all around the world, no one expected to see it happen in a football match, let alone the entire team participating in it to make it world-class.
Luis Suarez legging it over to Moyes to dive in front of him will never not be hilarious.pic.twitter.com/tVoJJdcEUW

Luis Suarez never shied from stirring the pot, and his 2012 celebration against Everton was proof. Suarez had been accuses by Everton’s manager, David Moyes, of diving and trying to influence the referee into giving his team a penalty when he was not actually fouled. Suarez executed the perfect reply to this, and after scoring in the Merseyside Derby, he mock-dived in front of then-Everton boss David Moyes. Suarez ran and dived right in front of Moyes to emphasise his point, and while this celebration was petty, it was executed perfectly and stands as one of the funniest celebrations in football.
One of Wayne Rooney’s funniest goal celebrations came against Tottenham Hotspur in 2015. Just before the game, footage of Wayne Rooney sparring with his friend, Phil Bardsley, was leaked to the media. Rooney appeared to get knocked out in this video, and the player was facing a lot of criticism due to this video being leaked. However, Rooney decided to hit back in the perfect way. He scored a goal against Spurs and celebrated by boxing the air and pretending to get knocked out, falling to the ground gracefully. Wayne Rooney later revealed that he had not thought this celebration out, and it had just come to him the moment he scored the goal.
