Former joint secretary of The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Amitabh Choudhary passed away in the early hours on Tuesday. The 58-year-old was taken to Santevita Hospital with unnamed sources claiming that Choudhary suffered a massive cardiac arrest. The ex-Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) chairman is said to have collapsed in Ashok Nagar in Ranchi on Tuesday morning before being announced dead on August 16.
The JSCA confirmed the news on Tuesday about Choudhary, who had served as the acting cricket board secretary. Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren shared a statement on the administrator’s death. He took to Twitter and said, “Received the sad news of the sudden demise of former JPSC Chairman Amitabh Choudhary ji. Former IPS officer Amitabh ji was also instrumental in increasing the game of cricket in the state. May God give peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss.”

Former BCCI board treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry also spoke on the veteran administrator’s death. The Indian Express newspaper has quoted him saying, “Amitabh’s contribution to the game of cricket in Jharkhand was immense. He will be missed by JSCA and it will be difficult to fill the void left by him in Jharkhand. I offer my condolences to his family, friends and well wishers.”
Choudhary was a former IPS officer who had a lot of passion for cricket. He was the Indian team manager during the Men in Blue’s tour to Zimbabwe in 2005-06. The tour remains well known for the infamous Sourav Ganguly-Greg Chappell fallout. Later, Choudhary was also seen working under the CoA in the BCCI.
Apart from working with the BCCI, the former JSCA chairman also played a key role in the rise of Ranchi as the headquarters of cricket in the state of Jharkhand. Choudhary played a key role in seeing a world class stadium being built in the state while shifting the base of cricket from Jamshedpur. It sees one end of the stadium in Ranchi being named after him.
