Mario Coluna is regarded as one of the best Portuguese midfielders of all time. Coluna played for Benfica for a major part of his career. He was at the Portuguese club from 1954 to 1970 and made 518 appearances for them. The Benfica star was extremely successful during his time at the club. He won 18 major trophies in Benfica, including 10 league titles and two European Cups.

Coluna managed to score eight goals for Portugal in 57 appearances. The Portuguese midfielder was known for his cool and composed passing and his ability to read the game. He had impeccable vision which helped him become one of the best midfielders Portugal has ever had. Coluna even helped Portugal finish third in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. His team lost to England in the semi-final. England went on to win the World Cup.

Rui Costa is a well-known name in football even after all these years. Costa was known for his creativity more than anything. He played as an attacking midfielder throughout his career. Rui Costa played for Benfica, Fafe, Fiorentina, and AC Milan in his 19-year career. Costa started his career at Benfica. After winning the league title with them, he moved to Fiorentina when he turned 21.

The Portuguese midfielder played for Fiorentina for seven years before moving to AC Milan in 2001. Costa won six major trophies with Milan including both Serie A and Champions League titles. The AC Milan team Rui Costa was a part of is regarded as one of the best teams in football history. Rui Costa earned 94 caps for Portugal and scored 26 goals for them which puts him at seventh place in Portugal’s all-time top scorers list.

Luis Figo is one of the players who has famously played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona. Figo played for Sporting, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan in his career. After starting his career in Sporting, Figo moved to Barcelona in 1995. He was one of their best players and won both La Liga and Champions League titles with them before controversially moving to Real Madrid in 2000.

Figo also won the Ballon d’Or in 2000. He received the Ballon d’Or for his contributions to both Barcelona and Real Madrid in 2000. He was at the club from 1961 to 1975. In this time, he won 29 major titles including 11 league titles and one European Cup. The Benfica star scored a whopping 473 goals in 440 appearances for Benfica.

Eusebio won the Ballon d’Or in 1965 and is one of the three Portugal footballers to have ever won this prestigious award. As for his international career, Eusebio played 64 games for Portugal and scored 41 goals. He helped his team come third in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Eusebio scored nine goals in the 1966 World Cup and won the World Cup Golden Boot.

Cristiano Ronaldo is arguably the best player Portugal has ever had. He is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played football. The Portuguese star is the top scorer in the Champions League, has the most international goals, and is the top goal scorer in history. His statistics for both club and country are phenomenal.

Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or award on five different occasions. He won the award in the years 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.
