Mario Kempes is the player who helped Argentina win their first-ever FIFA World Cup. Before Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi won the World Cup, Kempes brought the World Cup home to Argentina. The Valencia striker was then the only player called up by Cesar Luis Menotti to be called up for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. This decision paid off very well as the Argentine ended up scoring six goals in the competition, including two against the Netherlands in the World Cup final.
Kempes’ brace in the finals helped guide Argentina to a 3-1 win against Netherlands in the final. The Valencia star won the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot at the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

Alfredo di Stefano is regarded as one of Real Madrid’s greatest players. Considering the players who have played for Real Madrid, achieving this feat is nothing short of amazing. The Argentine forward helped guide the Los Blancos to an incredible feat of winning five consecutive European Cups.
The Real Madrid legend was not known just for his time at the Bernabeu. He also helped River Plate win back-to-back Primera titles. While Di Stefano did not play much for the Argentina national team, his brief stint with them was very impressive. The Argentine scored six goals in six games to help his country win in the 1947 South American Championship.

Diego Maradona has achieved much with Argentina but is most famous for his ‘Hand of God’ goal. The Argentine scored with his hand against England in the Quarterfinals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup. After the game, when asked Maradona if he had scored the goal illegally, he replied, “A little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God”. This is where the term’ Hand of God’ comes from. Argentina went on to win the 1986 FIFA World Cup, with Diego Maradona winning the Golden Ball.
Maradona is also regarded as an icon at Serie A side Napoli. The Argentine helped revolutionize the club. The Serie A side managed to win the league title twice, namely in the 1986/87 and the 1989/90 seasons with Maradona. He also helped them win the UEFA Cup in the 1988/99 season.

Lionel Messi is arguably the best player in football history. Messi has 821 goals and 361 assists in 1047 appearances in his career. His statistics are out of this world. The only thing Lionel Messi was missing was an international trophy. The Argentine did not win any international trophies with Argentina till 2021. However, his international trophy drought ended in 2021 and ended with some style.
The ex-Barcelona star managed to win the 2021 Copa America trophy with Argentina. The La Albiceleste beat Brazil in the final to clinch the tournament trophy. Messi followed this up by winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The World Cup is the most prestigious trophy for a footballer, and in 2022, Messi, along with Argentina, was finally able to lift it. They beat France in the final to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Messi finally added the World Cup to his trophy cabinet. This pushed him ahead of Diego Maradona and made him the best Argentine player ever.
