Jasprit Bumrah is all set to lead India in the rescheduled Test match against England at Edgbaston. The speedster will become India’s 36th Test captain when he steps out for the toss against the Three Lions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Rohit Sharma has failed to recover from Covid-19 and has been ruled out of the Test match. In Sharma’s absence, Bumrah will captain India with Rishabh Pant his deputy.

Bumrah joined Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the 5th Test for the pre match press conference. While speaking to the media, he said he was delighted to captain the Men in Blue. Calling the opportunity a huge honour, he also spoke how India will miss Rohit Sharma for the 5th Test.
“It’s a huge achievement, a huge honour. When I started playing, Test cricket was a dream. To lead India is the biggest achievement of my career. Rohit Sharma is a very important player and we will miss him. It is unfortunate that he is missing out,” said Jasprit Bumrah.
The 28-year-old pacer has never captained a team at any level and has no experience leading a team. However, former Indian captain MS Dhoni too didn’t have experience of leading a cricket team at any level. Yet he remains to be the captain in the sports history to win all three ICC trophies.

Bumrah said he spoke to Dhoni after his appointment as captain while adding how he is looking forward to this challenge. Bumrah said, “I have spoken to MS Dhoni, and he told me that he captained India straight away, he had never captained anywhere else and he is one of the most successful captains. I am just focusing on how to help the team and not on what I have done before.”
England has already announced their playing XI for the fifth and final Test match. James Anderson has been added back to the starting 11 after the veteran pacer missed the 3rd Test against New Zealand. The Men in Blue lead the series by a 2-1 margin and will be eager to walk away with a historic series win against the Three Lions on Friday.
