Mizoram may be one of the smaller states in India but even with a population of only over a million, it has produced many notable footballers. With the introduction of the Indian Super League (ISL), the growth of the game in the country has risen tremendously. Many formerly unknown footballers from the state got the perfect platform to display their football skills. Now, many of them have become icons for their fans.
While ISL tapped into the potential of football in the country, the fantasy sports brands introduced this game for players on a digital platform which turned out to a bonanza for the football enthusiasts. Let us now take a look at players from Mizoram who are fan favourites in the game.
Jeje Lalpekhlua is the perhaps the most well-known on the list and rightly so. He plays as a centre-forward in the Indian national football team and for the SC East Bengal team in ISL. He is one of the most valuable Mizo players. Jeje is the second highest goal scorer in the entire ISL and was awarded the FPAI Football Player of the Year in 2015.
Turning his passion into a career in football is Jerry Lalrinzuala. Playing as a left back for the club Chennaiyin and the Indian national team, Lalrinzuala is one of the best defenders around. In 2016, Lalrinzuala was among five players who were sponsored for their training with FC Metz in France.
Lalkhawpuimawia plays as a center-forward for the NorthEast United FC and is also a left-midfielder. Before 2017, this 28-year-old player was playing as a semi-professional with Chhinga Veng FC and signed up with Aizawl in January 2018. He played a total of 46 matches so far and has scored a total of 14 goals.
Another footballer to watchout for is Rochharzela, a midfielder for the NorthEast United club in ISL. During the 2019-2020 season, he ruled the maximum goals tally and was the top Aizawl player to do so. He also plays for the Mizoram Premier League and has scored six goals from 14 starts for NorthEast United in ISL.
This skilled footballer from Mizoram plays as a winger for the Indian national football team and club Chennaiyin. In 2014, Lallianzuala Chhangte played for the under-18 team for DSK Shivajians’s Liverpool International Football Academy and finished the season as the top scorer in the league with 16 goals. He continues to improve his game and even scored seven goals for Chennaiyin FC during the 2019-20 season. This earned him the title of second highest Indian goalscorer for that season.
