Recently former India captain Virat Kohli was accused of ‘fake fielding’ by Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan during the Men in Blue’s 5-run win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. After losing the match, Hasan claimed that the on-field umpires missed out on an incident involving Kohli, which should have resulted in the match officials awarding Bangladesh with five crucial penalty runs.
Cricket Law 41.5.1 states: “It is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball.” The incident Hasan spoke about happened in the 7th over of the Bangladesh innings. Litton Das hit Axar Patel’s ball towards the off-side field as Arshdeep Singh picked it up and threw it. Kohli, standing at the point, acted like the ball was going past him when it wasn’t.
Kohli was spotted distracting Shanto by “fake fielding.” As per the law, India was supposed to be given 5 runs penalty for such a shameful. But guess what? The on-field umpires didn’t even care to recheck and instantly denied taking any action. #cheating #T20WorldCup #INDvBAN pic.twitter.com/A5MPAIilE8

Nurul Hasan was quoted speaking on the incident after the game saying, “Eventually, when we talk about these things, there was also a fake throw. It could have been a five-run penalty. That also could have gone our way, but unfortunately, even that didn’t materialize.”
The incident went unnoticed at that time by Chris Brown and Marais Erasmus, who were the on-field umpires for the game. Bangladesh batters Litton Das, and Najmul Hossain Shanto also failed to bring it up to the umpire during the game.
However, there is no law that stops a player from tricking the batter, and it has been an incident that happened in the past. Back in 2021, Quinton de Kock managed to get the wicket of Fakhar Zaman by tricking the Pakistan batsman during their clash in the 2nd ODI at the Wanderers. The South Africa wicketkeeper’s ‘fake fielding’ attempt resulted in the Fakhar Zaman run-out.

The incident took place during the first delivery of the final over of the game. Zaman hit the ball towards cover and managed to get a quick single. The left-handed batsman was comfortably positioned to complete the 2nd run, but Quinton de Kock deliberately distracted him. The SA wicketkeeper managed to make Zaman believe that the ball was not coming towards him.
The distraction, alongside Aiden Markram’s accurate throw, ended up costing Pakistan star him his wicket at Johannesburg. South Africa eventually ended up winning that match and went on to level the three-match ODI series by a 1-1 margin.
