Zaheer Khan, who was earlier the director of cricket operations, is now the global head of cricket development. The streamlining of the coaching staff is done after the Mumbai Indians owners bought the two new teams. They now own the Mumbai Indians in IPL, MI Cape Town in the SA20 and MI Emirates in the ILT20.
It is believed that the owners wanted to have one person in charge of the entire coaching arm globally. They have decided to promote Jayawardene for the role citing how he is best suited because of his extensive experience as a coach. He is set to be heavily involved in MI teams for both the ILT20 and the SA20 competitions which will take place in January-February 2023.
The former Sri Lanka cricketer will oversee the coaching and scouting for all the three teams owned by the Ambani family. He has already started work and was reported to conduct discussions with Mark Boucher for the position of head coach at MI Cape Town. Jayawardene is also set to identify the team’s five direct acquisitions for the SA20 team in August and be involved in the player auction which will happen in Cape Town.

Speaking on the new role Mahela Jayawardene has been quoted saying, “It is an absolute honour for me to lead MI’s global cricket operations. Mrs. Ambani and Akash’s leadership and guidance have made MI the most valued global cricket franchise and I am very happy to see MI grow globally. I look forward to this new responsibility to build a strong cohesive global brand of cricket.”
Zaheer Khan said, “I am humbled to take on this new role and thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash for their faith in me. MI has been home for me as a player and as a coaching team member, and now as we embark on a new journey, I look ahead to working closely with all the stakeholders in the global network to unearth new potential that can join the family.”
