Former India wicket keeper Saba Karim has shared his opinion on the new ‘Impact Player’ rule which will be introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He feels that the new upcoming rule can go on to create interesting scenarios, and possibilities, on the pitch for players when it is implemented.
As per the new rule, every team will be permitted to make one substitution in their starting XI during the match. It is an option provided to the team which can be availed if they feel it will be helpful to them. The new ‘Impact Player’ rule is expected to be tested out at state-level cricket level by India’s cricket governing body first before testing it out elsewhere.
Speaking on SPORTS18’s sports show, Saba Karim said, “I feel it’s quite simple. Although the impact player rule being included in the 11, I think it has more to do with the situation and condition. So, I sincerely feel that will throw up interesting possibilities of which the teams can really do well to take some advantage in a particular game.”

“You’re talking about strategies, you’re talking about tactics, all that will come into play. And the fact remains that you can bring a substitute by the end of the 14th over. So, the captain needs to be very flexible, they need some more inputs from the coaching staff. So, all that one can see in the coming domestic tournament”, Saba Karim added.
BCCI is said to have decided upon introducing this unique rule in order to make the contests more interesting. The Indian Cricket board will run the impact player rule in domestic cricket first. It is set to benefit teams with substitute players, especially with the growing popularity of the T20 games.
The rumored upon concept will see substituted players actively participate in a match. It is also being reported that BCCI could look to implement the rule in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, if it receives positive response during the trial period.
