Former England white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan has voiced out his support for Jos Buttler on Tuesday. The wicket-keeper batter took charge of the Three Lions as their full time ODI captain after Morgan decided to retire from international cricket.
Buttler’s first outing did not go as planned with England suffering a massive 10-wicket loss to India at the Kennington Oval. Morgan has backed the new white ball captain to make a strong statement in the locker room after the loss to Men in Blue.
The 35-year-old former cricketer spoke how he resonates with Buttler sharing that he faced a similar scenario when he took charge of England. Speaking with Sky Sports, he said, “I am familiar with how it seems. It is not nice since you are looking inward rather than forth. Jos, though, will see this as an excuse to send a very clear and powerful word about what they’re headed and what they are doing in that changing room because of his prior experience both playing and leading.”
He added, “Even the most effective message will not be effective if the recipient is not paying attention. However, I can assure you that everyone in the locker room pays attention when you lose. In situations like this, it is vital for your leader to provide a clear message and for your senior players to model it.”

Buttler’s stint as the white ball captain of England has not started off well. The 31-year old’s first assignment as full-time captain in limited overs format was the T20I series against India. The Three Lions failed to get going in the first two matches as the Men in Blue recorded comfortable wins at Southampton and Birmingham.
India registered a 50-run win in the first game and went on to clinch the 3-match series with a 49-run win in the second T20I. After being outplayed in the first 2 games, The Three Lions were able to pull one back. They went on to record a consolidatory 17 run win over India in the third and last game.
England have started off the ODI series on a similar note, tasting heavy defeat in the first clash. Buttler’s men will look to avoid replicating poor performances and bounce back against the Men in Blue. The Three Lions are set to take on India in the second ODI at Lords, with the 3rd ODI set to be played at Old Trafford in Manchester.
