In a thrilling climax to the 2025 UEFA Women’s EURO, England’s women’s team emerged victorious over the current World Cup winners, Spain, beating them on penalties. The Lionesses, who had fallen short in the 2023 World Cup final against the same opposition, found poetic redemption in this fiercely contested final. This win allowed the England women’s football team to defend the Euro title. They had managed to win the previous Euro tournament as well, beating Germany in the final of the Women’s Euro 2022. This article talks about the final between Spain and England and how the Lionesses managed to get past the mighty Spain and win the 2025 edition of the Women’s Euro 3-1 on penalties.

Spain started the game very strongly, and in the 25th minute, Aitana Bonmati found Athenea del Castillo near England’s penalty box. Castillo saw Ona Batlle make a fantastic run behind England’s defence and played her through. Batlle crossed the ball into a very dangerous area, and while Lucy Bronze was marshalling the back post, Mariona Caldentey managed to get the better of her. She caught Bronze sleeping and managed to get ahead of her and caught the ball brilliantly with her head, sending the ball past Hannah Hampton into the top right corner to score the first goal of the game. This gave Spain the all-important lead in the final of the 2025 Women’s Euro.
Spain continued to attack England’s goal, but in the 57th minute, England created an opportunity of their own. The move started well into England’s half when Keira Walsh found Georgia Stanway near the left wing. Stanway laid the ball for Chloe Kelly on the left wing, and the English star took two touches and made some space for herself before crossing the ball with her right foot. The cross was nearly perfect, and while the ball was a little high for Russo, the English striker pedalled a few steps back and jumped. Russo caught the ball with the top of her head and saw it float past Cata Coll into the left side of the goal to bring England level.

While both teams tried to find a winner in the remainder of the match as well as extra time, neither managed to score again, forcing the game into a penalty shootout. England started the penalty shootout, but it was a disastrous start as Beth Mead’s penalty was quite near the centre and Coll managed to save it with her left hand. Patricia Guijarro decided to aim in the centre as well, but Hampton ended up diving, and Spain took a 1-0 lead. Alex Greenwood stepped up next and decided to go to the right side. Coll read the direction, but while she guessed right, she was unable to stretch enough to keep it out.

Spain’s goal scorer, Mariona Caldentey, stepped up next but took a very poor and slow penalty to the right side, and Hampton managed to read her well and saved the penalty to level the score. Niamh Charles stepped up next for England and managed to send the keeper the wrong way to put England into the lead. Ainara Bonmati, arguably Spain’s best player, stepped up next and tried going to the left of the goalkeeper, but it was a bit too close to Hampton, and she managed to make a fine save to deny Bonmati. Leah Williamson stepped up next to double England’s lead, but Coll managed to guess correctly and saved the penalty to keep Spain in the game.
Salma Paralluelo had the chance to level the score, but she ended up trying to be too precise and missed the goal completely, taking the matters out of Spain’s hands. All Chloe Kelly had to do was score the penalty, and she took a brilliant penalty, sending it near the roof of the goal and out of Coll’s reach to help England win 3-1 on penalties and defend their UEFA Euro title. While Spain was arguably the better team in regulation time, it was England who managed to eventually clinch the trophy and win the 2025 edition of the UEFA Women’s Euro.
