Through substantial funding and support, including state-of-the-art facilities for professional training, these athletes are breaking records and inspiring future generations.
In Indian athletics, Shaili Singh has been causing a stir. She enrolled in the long jump Junior India Camp in 2018 at the age of 14, receiving coaching from Dronacharya Robert Bobby George with funding from the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation and the Sports Authority of India. In the U-16 (6.15 m), U-18 (6.48 m), and U-20 (6.76 m) categories, Shaili holds the national records. She demonstrated her strength as an international contender by winning two silver medals at the Junior World Athletics Championships in 2021 and the Asian Championships in 2023.
She reached a world rating of 22 in October 2023, although she was just 11 points away from meeting the quota for the Paris Olympics in 2024. At the Indian Grand Prix in April 2023, Shaili won gold by jumping a personal best of 6.76 meters, which was the second-highest by any Indian woman. She competed in the Asian Indoor Championships, the Budapest World Athletics Championships, the Hangzhou Asian Games, and the World Athletics Seiko Grand Prix in Yokohama, Japan, where she won a bronze medal. She also participated in six international World Athletics Continental Tour competitions in 2024, winning two silver and one bronze.
Shaili is poised to carry forward India’s long jump legacy and is expected to break the national record of 6.83 meters set by Anju Bobby George at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
It is well known that Poorva Hitesh Sawant possesses incredible power and speed. Since starting her adventure at age seven, she has competed in a variety of events, such as the long jump and heptathlon, until in 2021, she realised she had a penchant for the triple jump. Poorva’s commitment to training under Robert Bobby George led to impressive accomplishments once she relocated to Bangalore in 2022.
With a jump of 13.06 meters, she placed fourth at the Asian Indoor Championship in 2023. She also won gold at the National Federation Cup and the Indian Grand Prix in 2024, as well as the Third Indian Open Jumps Competition. Her perseverance eventually paid off in 2023 when she took home gold at the U-23 National Championship and silver at the All India Inter University Championship.
Her winning gold medal at the Khelo India University Games in 2024 was a major turning point in her athletic career. Her access to first-rate coaching, top-notch training facilities, and nutritious food was made possible by the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation’s sponsorship after she enrolled in the National Junior Camp in 2017. Despite having a personal best of 6.14 meters, Kusuma’s enormous potential indicates that she may not have reached her peak yet.
