Dilip Vengsarkar criticises BCCI for neglecting young players development for captaincy: Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has expressed his concern over the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India’s neglect of young players development for the sake of captaincy. Providing his thoughts on the BCCI selecting committee, Vengsarkar criticised the board for not prioritising the grooming of young players and instead focusing solely on appointing captains.
He believed that the selectors should have groomed a new captain instead of immediately giving the captaincy to Shikhar Dhawan. Due to the heavy schedule of cricket in 2021 and 2022, the Indian selectors decided to send B teams on some overseas tours. This allowed the prominent squad members to rest and recover while allowing some of the younger players to gain experience. Veteran Shikhar Dhawan was appointed captain of the B teams instead of some fresh face.
Although India was successful under Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy, with multiple series wins, Vengsarkar believes that the selection committee should have given a younger player a chance to lead the team.
“The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six and a half years neither have the vision, deep knowledge of the game, or cricketing sense,” Vengsarkar told the Hindustan Times. They made Shikhar Dhawan India B captain (when tours overlapped and key players were missing); this is where the next captain is groomed.”

He said that the BCCI has failed to build a good squad despite significant earnings from the sale of IPL media rights. Aside from that, they have not been able to develop sufficient bench strength.
He further added that there are many other vital parts of cricket that need to be addressed, including player development, infrastructure, and grassroots activities. By focusing on these areas, the BCCI can secure Indian cricket’s long-term prosperity and provide more possibilities for future generations of players.
India’s national cricket team is currently on a break, but they will return to action next month in the Caribbean for a two-match Test series against West Indies. The selectors will be under pressure to pick a strong squad for the new World Test Championship cycle, after India’s failure to win the previous two editions.
