Shikhar Dhawan is reportedly in line to captain the Indian cricket team at the 2023 Asian Games. VVS Laxman, a former Indian batter, is also being considered as the team’s head coach. However, no final decision has been made yet.
The Asian Games are not recognized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and may clash with other major cricket tournaments, such as the Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The Indian women’s cricket team, on the other hand, will not have any other commitments in September besides domestic cricket.
The upcoming 19th edition of the Asian Games will be held in China, marking the country’s third time as the host nation. Beijing, the capital city, previously hosted the Games in 1990, while Guangzhou, another prominent Chinese city, had the privilege of hosting the prestigious event in 2010.
During the upcoming BCCI Apex Council Meeting on 7th July, the topic of India’s participation in the Asian Games 2023 will be discussed. Despite some initial concerns, the decision has been made for both the men’s and women’s teams to travel to Hangzhou, China.
The quadrennial event is set to clash with both the Asia Cup 2023 and the World Cup 2023, both of which India is hosting. This presents a conflict, making it unlikely that any of the notable World Cup players will be able to take part in the tournament.
In case the BCCI opts for a younger team, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal could be considered for captaincy if they do not make it to the World Cup squad. The rest of the team, according to InsideSport, is expected to comprise mainly of players who are below 23 years of age and those who have demonstrated their abilities in the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Despite Shikhar Dhawan’s impressive track record in ICC tournaments, he has recently been overshadowed by younger players, resulting in a decline in his ranking within the team. Currently, the veteran left-hander is working on his fitness at the NCA, having been excluded from the squad for the West Indies tour.
