New Zealand allrounder Daryl Mitchell has suffered a major blow on his chances of participating in the highly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. The 31-year-old is currently ruled out of participating in the ongoing tri-series against Pakistan and Bangladesh.
While batting during the net practice session before the Kiwis’ first tri-series clash against Pakistan on Saturday, Mitchell was hit on his right hand and suffered a fracture on his finger. It has resulted in the all-rounder wrapping his hand in a cast for at least two weeks. With the ICC T20 World Cup set to begin in less than 10 days, questions are raised if the Kiwis all rounder can make it into the team for the highly anticipated tournament.
The New Zealand cricket team coach shared how the question on Daryl Mitchell’s availability remains unanswered. He went on to claim how the player is an important part of the T20 set up and could still play in the T20 World Cup. Gary Stead was quoted by Cricbuzz saying, “It’s a real shame for Daryl Mitchell to suffer this injury on the eve of an exciting period of cricket for the side. “
“Daryl’s become a really important player to our T20 unit and we’re certainly going to miss his all-round skills and versatility in the tri-series. With our first game of the World Cup in just over two weeks we need to take some time to consider Daryl Mitchell’s recovery timeline and his potential involvement in the tournament,” he added.

Mitchell has been a key part of the New Zealand team across all formats of the game in recent past. He has been one of the most consistent performers with the bat in the shortest format of the game scoring 301 runs in 13 innings while registering a strike rate of 144.71 since the T20 World Cup last year.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is expected to announce Mitchell’s replacement for the ongoing tri-series soon with the Black Caps scheduled to play their first game against Pakistan on 8th October. Following the tri series, the Kiwis are reported to leave for Australia on 15th October.
Slotted in Group 1 of the Super 12 stage, New Zealand will play the likes of England, Afghanistan and Australia alongside 2 qualifying teams in their ICC T20 World Cup games. They begin their campaign against defending champions Australia – with both the teams set to lock horns on 22nd October at the SCG.
