Former England pacer Darren Gough has backed India’s speed sensation Umran Malik to be a part of the Men in Blues’ contingent for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. The Englishman added that despite India boasting good options likes Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh, Malik would be an excellent pick at the ICC event in Australia.
India has a plethora of options to choose from the fast-bowling pool right now. Jasprit Bumrah is undoubtedly one of the best bowlers in the country across all formats and is a fixed starter. Apart from him, Mohammed Shami has emerged as a solid choice as a limited overs bowler while maintaining his prowess in red ball cricket. The speedster was a crucial part of India’s recent 2-1 series win over England in ODIs.
The likes of Krishna, Siraj and Arshdeep Singh have also done well. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has also returned to his lethal best in the shortest format of the game. However, Darren Gough believes that Malik should be a part of the India squad for the T20 World Cup. He goes on to share his preferred bowling line up on the Men in Blue for the ICC event in Australia.
The 51-year-old was interacting with the cricket.com/tv YouTube channel. He said, “Bumrah, in my opinion, is the best fast bowler in the world across all formats. He is your top choice—the perfect choice. Due to his proficiency with the new ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is brought in.”
Darren Gough added, “Bhuvneshwar Kumar plays a crucial role in slowing the momentum by getting early wickets. Throughout the England vs. India series, we have observed it. So, in my opinion, he must be included there.”
He also spoke on the inclusion of Siraj and Malik in the ICC squad too. Darren Gough said, “Mohammed Siraj moves quickly. He impressed me both when I have seen him bowl in Australia and India. And then there is Umran Malik. Anyone who bowls that quickly gets my team. You might only need a little additional speed on Australian fields to surprise the opposition.”
The Indian cricket team is set to play white ball series against West Indies, which will be followed by a few matches against Zimbabwe before they feature in the Asia Cup. It remains interesting to see what approach will Rahul Dravid and the think tank will take for the World Cup.
