Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria spoke about the Men in Green’s team selection ahead of the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2022. He also revealed his thoughts on the potential starting XI during their tournament opener against India. The sub continental rivals are set to square off against each other on 28th August at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Both the teams last squared off in a group stage clash at the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021. The Men in Green went on to register a comprehensive 10 wicket win against their arch nemesis. While Pakistan will be eager to replace the result, they will miss out on the services of one of the key architects of the previous win in Shaheen Shah Afridi. The 22-year-old pacer has not been called up to be a part of the Asia Cup squad after being ruled out from participating in the tournament due to an injury on his right knee ligament.
While speaking with Cricketaddictor, Danish Kaneria pointed out one of the biggest mistakes made by the Pakistan Cricket Board. He claimed that the middle-order looked weak while terming PCB’s decision to exclude Shoaib Malik from the Asia Cup squad as ‘the biggest mistake.’
The 41-year-old said, “Mohammad Rizwan is a very talented and hard-working cricketer and he’s the backbone of Pakistan’s batting lineup alongside Babar Azam. Pakistan’s middle-order looks weak. Shoaib Malik’s exclusion from Pakistan’s Asia Cup squad is the biggest mistake that PCB has committed. He’s been such an experienced batter in the middle-order and is completely fit.”

Danish Kaneria used veteran Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik as a reference point while explaining how Pakistan could have used Malik at the 6-nation tournament. He said, “Dinesh Karthik has been around ever since T20 cricket has come into place and now he’s been handed a specific role by the team management and Karthik is fulfilling that role to perfection. “
“Similarly, Shoaib Malik is our senior player, and we should have utilized him if he’s fit. Even in the T20 World Cup, we saw how he played an anchor role for Pakistan in a couple of games and held the fort from one end,” The former spinner added.
He concluded the topic by also saying that, “Pakistan’s middle order looks very weak and if you look at India’s bowling lineup, especially the spinners, you should have had an experienced player like Shoaib Malik.”
“Pakistan has made a huge blunder by not keeping him in the side for Asia Cup 2022. I doubt if Asif Ali will play. Khushdil Shah should be in the XI because he can turn up to be an extra bowling option for the skipper,” Danish Kaneria stated.
