Cricket South Africa (CSA) has decided not to play the One Day International (ODI) matches against the Aussies next year. Cricket Australia took to Twitter, sharing news on how the 50-over series has been canceled. The 3-ODI games are rumored to be aborted because the dates of those matches clashed with the schedule of South Africa’s new T20 League.

Earlier, CSA had expressed interest in shifting the dates of the ODI matches against Australia. However, those matches could not be rescheduled given the hectic international calendar, leaving Australia without any available slot. With no agreeable solution to be reached upon, the Proteas decided to withdraw from the ODI series.
CSA is also reported to have agreed upon conceding all the points of the ODI series to Australia. However, both the teams are set to go on with scheduled Test matches. They are set to square off in a three-match Test series during the Proteas’ tour Down Under.

Cricket Australia’s CEO released a statement regarding CSA’s decision to abort the ODI matches. It read as, “It is disappointing that Cricket South Africa will be unable to contest the ODI series in January. That said, we are delighted to be hosting South Africa for the three-Test series which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests and with the comprehensive schedule of international cricket that will take place across Australia throughout the summer.”
He added, “This will include the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a record six touring teams for the Men’s and Women’s international series as well as the twelfth season of the BBL and the eighth season of the WBBL. We can’t wait to see fans back at the cricket this summer.”
The canceled matches were meant to be a part of the ongoing ICC Super League, whose cut-off date is May 2023. The decision to withdraw from the ODI series will have a major impact on South Africa’s direct qualification in the upcoming ODI World Cup.
The 50-over ICC event is all set to be played in India in 2023, which could see the Protea’ struggle to earn a direct qualification following their withdrawal. After learning about South Africa’s decision, Cricket Australia has decided to redirect venues for a few of their home games. It includes matches against teams like Pakistan, West Indies, and England.
