In what will go down as one of the most surprising Community Shield finals in recent memory, Crystal Palace stunned Liverpool with a thrilling 2-2 draw in normal time before winning 3-2 on penalties to lift the first piece of silverware of the 2025/26 season. The result not only brought joy to Palace supporters but also served as a statement that the South London club are ready for bigger challenges this season. For Liverpool, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow, especially given their dominance last season and the fact that they invested heavily into new players in the transfer market. This article talks about the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace in the Community Shield final.

The match, played yesterday in front of a packed Wembley crowd, began in electric fashion. Liverpool started the game very strongly, and Hugo Ekitike, one of their standout signings of the summer, managed to find the back of the net in just the fourth minute of the game to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead. Ekitike slickly combined with Florian Wirtz, and the German midfielder managed to pass the ball back to Ekitike, finding him at the edge of the box. The French striker managed to get a shot away, and the ball went past Dean Henderson and settled into the bottom right corner. The early goal sent the Liverpool fans into delirium and put Palace on the back foot.
While this was a big blow for Crystal Palace, they did not let it linger in their heads and managed to come back quickly and strongly. Ismaila Sarr was brought down by Virgil van Dijk in the penalty box, and a penalty was awarded to Crystal Palace. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up to take this penalty and calmly struck it into the bottom right corner to help Crystal Palace level the score in the 17th minute of the game. However, Crystal Palace did not get to feel good about themselves for a long time as Liverpool managed to score past Dean Henderson to take the lead again, this time with the help of another new signing, Dutch star Jeremie Frimpong.

Jeremie Frimpong found himself behind the Crystal Palace defence on the right flank and looked all but set to attempt a cross. In fact, most fans think that he did attempt to cross the ball, but the ball was way off his intended target. Frimpong’s toe poke ended up being more of a chipped shot than a cross, and the ball ended up looping over Dean Henderson, narrowly avoiding his outstretched hand before dipping under the bar and going into the Crystal Palace goal. This goal meant that Liverpool went into half-time with a 2-1 lead over Palace. While there were many chances in the second half, the decisive moment for Crystal Palace came in the 77th minute.
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton saw Virgil van Dijk make the mistake of stepping up and leaving a gap behind, and played a beautiful ball in the gap for Ismaila Sarr to try and chase down. Sarr managed to capitalise on this mistake by the Dutch defender and got through on goal with the ball in his control. Sarr decided to go to Alisson’s near post, and his shot actually ended up hitting the post before settling inside the goal to the relief of Crystal Palace fans. This goal made the score 2-2, and it was once again all to play for. However, neither team ended up scoring another goal, forcing the game into penalties.

The penalty shootout started off very poorly for Liverpool as their star player, Mohamed Salah, skied the ball. Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up first for Crystal Palace and scored to give them the lead. Alexis Mac Allister was the next penalty taker for Liverpool, but Dean Henderson made an incredible save to deny him. However, Alisson ended up saving Eberechi Eze’s penalty to keep the score 1-0. Cody Gakpo scored to level the score for Liverpool, but so did Ismaila Sarr, restoring Crystal Palace’s lead. Harvey Elliott stepped up next, and Henderson made another save, sending Palace fans into a frenzy. However, Borna Sosa missed his penalty, and this gave Liverpool a chance to come back in the penalty shootout.
Dominik Szoboszlai converted Liverpool’s fifth penalty to make the score 2-2, putting the pressure on 21-year-old Justin Devenny to score. However, despite all the pressure, the young star took a brilliant penalty and put the ball into the top right corner, making it 3-2 to Crystal Palace after five penalties each, which meant that the Eagles had managed to beat Liverpool and win the 2025 FA Community Shield title. The 2025 Community Shield final will be remembered not just for its scoreline but for the way it unfolded, with early goals, comebacks, and penalty drama. Crystal Palace fans will be happy that they came out on the winning side and will cherish this final for many years to come.
