Hector Scarone is a Uruguayan footballer who represented his national team from 1917 to 1930. He played in five different editions of the Copa America. The competition was known as the South American Championship during his time. He participated in the 1917, 1919, 1923, 1926, and 1927 South American Championships. He scored a total of 13 goals in this tournament. His biggest haul came in the 1926 edition of the competition. Scarone scored six goals, five of which came against Bolivia in a single game.

Jose Manuel Moreno, nicknamed ‘El Charro’, represented Argentina between 1936 and 1950. He scored 19 goals for them, 13 of which came in the South American Championship. Moreno was a part of the Argentina squad, which won 12-0 against Ecuador. He scored five goals in that match. He also became the top scorer in the tournament that year, scoring seven goals in the 1942 South American Championship.

Lionel Messi is arguably the best Argentina player of all time; therefore, it is no surprise to see him on this list. Messi has the most appearances in Copa America history, a record he shares with Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone. He will surely break this record when he plays in the 2024 Copa America, which will incidentally be his 7th Copa America tournament.
Lionel Messi has scored 13 goals in the competition in 34 games. His best tournament came in the Centenario, which took place in 2016. Messi scored five goals in this tournament. However, he had to wait till the 2021 edition of the tournament to end his wait for the trophy. Messi finally lifted the Copa America trophy in 2021.
Jair da Rosa Pinto, simply known as Jair, was a Brazilian footballer who played for his nation from 1940 to 1956. He scored 22 international goals, 13 of which came in the South American Championship. Jair had a huge impact on the nation of Brazil. In fact, Jair Bolsonaro, the former President of Brazil, was born on Jair’s 34th birthday and is named after him.

Gabriel Batistuta represented Argentina between 1991 and 2002. He is Argentina’s second-highest goal scorer after Lionel Messi. He has scored 56 goals for his nation in 78 games. Batistuta played in the 1991, 1993, and 1995 Copa America campaigns. His most successful campaign came in the 1991 Copa America. He scored six goals, finishing the tournament as the top scorer. He scored three goals in the 1993 campaign and four goals in the 1995 campaign of the tournament.

Ademir Marques de Menezes, known as Ademir, was a Brazilian striker who played for his nation from 1945 to 1953. He had an impressive goal-scoring record for his nation, scoring 32 goals in 39 games. 13 of these games came in the South American Championship, which makes him one of the top scorers in the tournament.

Eduardo Vargas is a striker who has represented Chile from 2009 onwards. He has made 106 appearances for his nation, scoring a total of 40 goals. He is the second-highest goal scorer for Chile. He has played in the 2015, Copa America Centenario (2016), 2019, and 2021 editions of the Copa America, scoring 13 goals in total. He scored four goals in the 2015 edition, making him the tournament’s joint-top scorer. He scored six goals in the Centenario, making him the top scorer in the tournament. He also scored two goals in each of the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Copa America, taking his total tally to 14 goals scored.

Paolo Guerrero is a Peruvian striker who made his international debut in 2004. He has made 114 appearances for his nation and scored 39 goals. He has represented his nation in five different Copa America tournaments. He played in the 2007, 2011, 2015, Copa America Centenario (2016), and 2019 editions of the Copa America. He opened his scoring in the tournament in 2007, scoring one goal.
His best performance in the tournament came in the 2011 Copa America tournament. He scored five goals and ended the tournament as the top scorer. In 2015, he scored four goals and ended as the joint-top scorer in the tournament. Guerrero scored one goal in the Copa America Centenario and three goals in the 2019 Copa America tournament, taking his tally to 14 goals scored.

Teodoro Fernández, known as Lola Fernandez, played for Peru from 1935 to 1947. He scored a total of 15 goals in Copa America history. He played in five editions of the Copa America, namely the 1935, 1937, 1939, 1941, and 1942 tournaments. He scored one, two, three, and two goals in the tournament’s 1935, 1979, 1941, and 1942 editions. However, his most successful campaign came in the 1939 Copa America. Fernandez scored seven goals in the tournament, ending as the tournament’s top scorer.

Zininho is the joint-top scorer in Copa America history. He was an attacking midfielder who played for Brazil from 1942 to 1957. He played in six different editions of the South American Championship for Brazil. His debut in the tournament came in 1942. He scored two goals in that tournament. He added another two goals to his tally in the 1945 South American Championship. His best-ever goal-scoring record in a single tournament was five goals. He scored five goals in each of the 1946 and 1949 South American Championships. He scored another goal in the 1953 tournament and two goals in his last Copa America tournament in 1957. This took his total goals scored in the competition to 17.

Norberto Mendez was an Argentine forward who represented his nation between 1945 and 1956. He made 31 appearances for his country and scored 19 goals. Mendez scored 17 of these 19 goals in the Copa America. He helped his team win three Copa America titles thanks to these 17 goals. The record of 17 goals in the competition is yet to be broken. Even after all these years, Norberto Mendez is the top scorer in Copa America history.
