Established in 1905, Chelsea Football Club is one of England’s most successful clubs and has won various trophies, such as the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup titles. The Blues have had some incredible players represent them throughout history, which, of course, means that they have paid some exuberant fees to sign such players. This article talks about Chelsea football club’s top 10 most expensive signings of all time and which players have managed to get on this list.

10. Christian Pulisic – £57.6 Million

Christian Pulisic signed a contract with the English Premier League side Chelsea on 2nd January 2019. The Blues paid a hefty fee of £57.6 Million to bring him to the club, which was the most expensive transfer fee for an American player ever and the second-most expensive in Borussia Dortmund’s history. Pulisic stayed with BVB till the end of the 2018/19 season before joining Chelsea on a permanent basis. Pulisic ended up representing the Blues across four seasons, leaving to join AC Milan at the start of the 2023/24 season.

9. Alvaro Morata – £60 Million

Alvaro Morata was signed by Chelsea on 19th July 2017 on a five-year contract. The Spanish striker decided to leave Real Madrid in search of more game time, and it was the Blues who decided to make the move and sign him. Chelsea agreed to pay a transfer fee of £60 Million to sign the talented striker, which was a club-record fee back in 2017. While Morata ended up staying at Chelsea from 2017 to 2020, he ended up playing for the Blues for just 1.5 years, spending the rest of the time on loan at Atletico Madrid.

8. Marc Cucurella – £62 Million

Marc Cucurella was signed by Chelsea on a six-year contract on 5th August 2022. The Blues signed him from Brighton & Hove Albion after he put in impressive performances in the Premier League while representing the Seagulls. The Blues agreed to pay an initial fee of £55 Million as well as possible add-ons worth £7 Million, taking the total package up to £62 Million. Marc Cucurella has since continued to play for Chelsea and is currently playing in their third season for the club.

7. Kai Havertz – £71 Million

Kai Havertz first started impressing with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. His performance caught the attention of some of the top teams in the world, and Chelsea decided to make a move for him. They signed Havertz on a five-year contract on 4th September 2020, agreeing to a total package worth £71 Million, with the initial transfer being worth £62 Million. This made Havertz Chelsea’s second-most expensive transfer at that time. The German star ended up playing for the Blues for three seasons before leaving to join Arsenal ahead of the 2023/24 season.

6. Kepa Arrizabalaga – £71.6 Million

Kepa Arrizabalaga first earned fame while playing for the Spanish side Athletic Bilbao. Chelsea was impressed by the young star and decided to sign him ahead of the 2018/19 season. Kepa moved to the Blues on 8th August 2018 after the club decided to trigger his release clause and pay a transfer fee of £71.6 Million to sign him, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper only weeks after the record was set by Alisson’s transfer to Liverpool. Kepa has continued to represent the Blues since 2018, but while he is still officially a Chelsea player, he has spent the last two seasons away on loan.

5. Wesley Fofana – £75 Million

Wesley Fofana is one of Chelsea’s most expensive transfers of all time. He made a name for himself while playing for Saint-Etienne, but it was while playing for Leicester City that he really managed to get into the spotlight. Chelsea, impressed with his performance for Leicester, decided to sign Fofana, agreeing to pay an initial fee of £70 Million as well as £5 Million in add-ons, taking the total package up to £75 Million. Fofana has since continued to play for Chelsea and has made a total of 34 appearances for them across all competitions as of today.

4. Mykhailo Mudryk – £89 Million

Mykhailo Mudryk is a Ukrainian winger who currently plays for the English Premier League side Chelsea. His skills as a winger caught the attention of Chelsea, and they decided to sign him on an eight-and-a-half-year contract on 15th January 2023. Mudryk’s initial transfer fee was worth £62 Million, but possible add-ons made the whole package worth a possible £89 Million. Mudryk has continued to play for the Blues ever since then, and he is currently playing in his third season for the club, having made a total of 73 appearances for them across all competitions already.

3. Romelu Lukaku – £97.5 Million

Romelu Lukaku joined Chelsea on a five-year contract on 12th August 2021 from Serie A side Inter Milan. This was the second time Chelsea signed him, this time agreeing to pay a huge fee of £97.5 Million to sign the talented striker. This was a club-record fee as of 2021, and this transfer made Lukaku the most expensive player of all time, with cumulative transfer fees of almost £285 million, surpassing Neymar. However, despite the massive transfer fee, Lukaku ended up playing for the Premier League side in just one season.

2. Enzo Fernandez – £106.8 Million

Enzo Fernandez came into the spotlight during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This midfielder was simply amazing for Argentina at the World Cup, and Chelsea decided to try to sign him in the 2023 January transfer window. Chelsea tried negotiating, but Benfica refused to budge, and the two teams ended up agreeing to a huge transfer fee of £106.8 Million on 31st January 2023. Fernandez agreed to an eight-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues and has since continued to represent the club.

1. Moises Caicedo – £115 Million

Moises Caicedo is Chelsea’s most expensive signing of all time. The central defensive midfielder was simply phenomenal for Brighton, and many clubs attempted to sign him. It looked like Caicedo was all but ready to sign with Liverpool, but Chelsea swopped in and agreed to pay a base fee of £100 Million along with add-ons worth £15 Million, paying Brighton a total package of £115 Million to sign Caicedo. They completed his signing on 14th August 2023, and Caicedo agreed to an eight-year contract with the club, with the option to extend it by another year.
