England managed to edge past India’s score in the first session of the 5th day at Birmingham. The last Test was a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-2023 cycle which saw the Ben Stokes-led side register a 7 wicket win. Jasprit Bumrah and his bowling unit failed to get going as the Three Lions registered their highest-ever Test run-chase to see the Test series end in a 2-2 draw.
The visitors were in control after an initial hiccup on the first day of the test. After finding themselves struggling at 98-5, the visitors found two heroes in Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, whose batting masterclass saw India bounce back in the game.
The Indian wicket-keeper went to record 146 runs off 111 balls. Jadeja also registered his third century in Test cricket with Bumrah playing a squash buckling cameo. The Indian skipper pocketed 35 runs in six deliveries to India’s score board against Stuart as India ended their innings with 416 in the first innings.

However, Jonny Bairstow played an counter attacking innings and scored his third consecutive Test hundred before the Three Lions all out for 284. India’s second innings saw them sit at 125/3 at the end of Day 3 before being bundled out for 245 with England set a target of 378 runs.
The opening pair of Alex Lees and Zak Crawley stitched a solid partnership up front while Root and Bairstow played aggressive cricket when they walked in to see the Three Lions score board read at 259/3 at the end of Day 4. The hosts scored the remaining 119 runs in the first session itself with Root and Bairstow registering a 269-run stand and smashing centuries to complete the historic run-chase.
Before the 5th Test, Rahul Dravid’s men were at the 3rd position with 58.33 percentage points against their name while England found themselves at the seventh spot. However, following the conclusion of the game, India have now slipped below Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship standings.

The Men in Blue were also penalized for maintaining slow over-rates in the last Test. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over if their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Every team is also fined one point for each over short.
With Bumrah’s men falling short by two over after considering all the factors, India was docked two WTC points. The points penalty is set to act as a heavy blow to the Men in Blue who will be eyeing the top two spots in the WTC cycle and make it to the final in 2023.
