Bengal all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed earned his maiden India team call up on Tuesday. The 27-year-old was drafted into the Men in Blue squad as a replacement of Washington Sundar for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The all-rounder walks into the team after registering impressive numbers for Bengal in domestic matches this season.
The 27-year-old records an average of 47.3 in List-A cricket recording two centuries and as many half-centuries. He has also proved to be a valuable asset with the ball, especially in turning conditions. Shahbaz Ahmed impressed for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the latest edition of the Indian Premier League as well. He ended the franchise-based tournament scoring 219 runs in 11 innings at an average of 27.38. Batting in the middle order, Ahmed played a lot of crucial knocks and ended up picking four wickets in IPL 2022.
Speaking on the maiden India call up, Shahbaz Ahmed revealed how every cricketer aspires to play for India from a young age. He went on to add how it was a dream come true moment for him. The 27-year-old also spoke about giving his all while playing for Bengal and spoke of his wish to win games for India.
The Cricket Association of Bengal shared a statement which quoted Shahbaz Ahmed saying, “Everybody who plays cricket wants to wear the India colours. Being called up for the Indian team is a dream come true. Whenever I have played for Bengal, I have given my all. The Bengal team believed in me. Given a chance, I hope I can win matches for India with my batting and bowling. I hope the team can bank on me.”

He added, “The association, especially the office bearers have always had faith in me. My coaches and my co-players on the team all have contributed greatly to me reaching this point. I am indebted to them.”
Shahbaz Ahmed is expected to catch up with the members of the Indian team soon. He is expected to feature in the 3-match ODIs which start off in Harare on Thursday. The Men In Blue head into the series after recording a comfortable win over West Indies in the 5-match T20Is. The hosts are coming off on the back of solid performances having registered twin victories in ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh.
