The Indian cricket team is all set to play a white ball series against South Africa before they head out for the T20 World Cup. The highly anticipated ICC event is also to be played in Australia this year with the tournament kicking off on 16th October.
Rohit Sharma’s side will start their campaign on 23rd October when they take on Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Ahead of the tournament, let’s look at India’s T20 record in Australian conditions and what could work for the Men in Blue.
The 2007 ICC T20 World Cup winners have played 12 matches in Australian conditions. They boast of a strong record while playing down under in the shortest format of the game having contested in 12 T20 games and emerged victorious in 7 matches. They have only lost 4 games so far with one match ending in a no result. A win percentage over 63% is a very good sign and will act as a major confidence booster for Rohit Sharma’s men.
Date | Opposition | Stadium |
23rd October, Sunday | Pakistan | Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne |
27th October, Thursday | Group A Runner-up | Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney |
30th October, Sunday | South Africa | Perth Stadium, Perth |
2nd November, Wednesday | Bangladesh | Adelaide Oval, Adelaide |
6nd November, Sunday | Group B Winner | Melbourne Cricket Ground |
It is also worth noting that most members of the Indian team have the experience of playing in Australia and need not take a lot of time to adjust according to the conditions. Most members of the Indian cricket team have played games in the country, be it Test, ODIs or T20 internationals. Many fringe players have also toured Australia while playing with the India A team before breaking into the main squad.
Indian team captain Rohit Sharma also boasts the second-highest win percentage by any T20I captain. He is just behind the Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan amongst skippers who have captained a team in minimum 30 matches.
Most Successful Captains (In Terms Of Percentage)
80.39 – Asghar Afghan, 41 wins in 51 matches
78.57 – Rohit Sharma, 33 wins in 42 matches
He also surpassed Virat Kohli and to become the second most successful captain for the Men in Blue in T20Is. The 35-year-old finds himself just a few spots behind MS Dhoni and could go on to edge out the former wicketkeeper, quite possibly in Australia.
Most Wins As India’s Captain In T20Is
42 – MS Dhoni, in 72 matches
33 – Rohit Sharma, in 42 matches
Sharma has proved his credentials as a captain in the shortest format of the game. He is set to lead a star studded side in Australia with the squad filled with match winners. Indian players have the ability to snatch away a win form any rival and will be eager to prove their mettle at the biggest stage possible.
The likes of Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik have been amongst the runs to build a formidable batting unit. Axar Patel also shined in the recently series, ensuring that India don’t miss Ravindra Jadeja down under. Citing all the factors, team India will head into the tournament as favourites and will be eager to win the ICC T20 World Cup once again, after lifting the trophy during it’s inaugural edition in 2007.
