Cricket Australia (CA) has expressed astonishment after finding out that Channel Seven have commenced legal proceedings against the body. Channel 7 has been the holder of broadcasting rights for cricket in Australia. They had filed court proceedings against CA, accusing the national cricket association of Australia for ‘repeated breaches of its six-year media rights contract.”
The television network is seeking a legal proceeding in the Federal Court hoping to end their current TV rights deal with Cricket Australia. Both the parties have been on different ends of this long-standing dispute with Channel Seven wanting to terminate the deal with immediate effect. Amid all the hassle, CA revealed how they were surprised to learn that Channel Seven began taking legal proceedings against them.

The owner of Channel Seven, Seven West Media, shared a statement speaking about their ongoing battle against Cricket Australia. It said, “Seven West Media Limited through its subsidiary Seven Network (Operations) Limited (Seven) has filed court proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against Cricket Australia (CA) in relation to multiple quality and standard breaches by CA of Seven’s Media Rights Agreement (MRA).”
Cricket Australia also spoke out in response to the situation saying, “Cricket Australia (CA) is aware of reports that our broadcast partner, the Seven Network, has commenced legal proceedings against CA in relation to recent COVID-impacted cricket seasons.”
The statement added, “CA delivered two very successful cricket seasons in 2020-21 and 2021-22, including every WBBL and BBL game and highly acclaimed international schedules, despite the enormous challenges presented by the global pandemic. In the circumstances, CA is astonished that Seven has brought this unwarranted action which will be strenuously defended.”
Channel Seven had signed a six-year deal with Cricket Australia in 2018 to be their free-to-air broadcast partner alongside with Foxtel who acted as a subscription provider. Later in 2020 Seven and CA approached an independent arbitrator with the media house seeking massive cuts.
Channel 7 wanted some relief on their broadcasting deal to tackle the losses they suffered amid the pandemic. The arbitrator later concluded that the media network should get only a A$5 million discount with Australia playing a complete BBL season as well as a Test series against India.
