All eyes were on Virat Kohli as the former skipper returned to international cricket after missing out on India’s recent tours against West Indies and Zimbabwe. The 33-year-old batter made a solid statement in his comeback game against arch rivals Pakistan at the Dubai international stadium on 28th August.
Rohit Sharma’s side restricted their archrivals down to a competitive score of 147 after the Indian skipper won the toss and decided to bowl first. Despite a solid first innings outing, India’s start to the second innings did not go as planned. The Men in Blue’s vice captain KL Rahul was dismissed for a golden duck within the first over itself which saw Virat Kohli walk out to back in a pressure situation.
Kohli survived an initial hiccup after edging Naseem Shahs’ delivery off to third slip. Luckily, Fakhar Zaman failed to keep hold of the ball and he survived. After the fluster, Kohli looked in fine touch and had a solid batting approach during the Powerplay overs. Despite playing well, the batter was dismissed in the 10th over when he mishit Pak spinner Mohammad Nawaz and was caught at long on by Iftikhar Ahmed.
The Delhi based star ended up scoring 35 runs off 34 deliveries against the Men in Green. His knock included three fours and a six as India registered a narrow win in their first match of the 6-nation tournament. After an average start against Pakistan, Kohli’s next assignment will see him take on Hong Kong in India’s second match of the continental tournament.

The minnows are set to play in the Asia Cup after they got the better of UAE during the qualification rounds of the tournament. They rode on the performance of Ehsan Khan, who claimed 4 wickets for 24 against UAE. After his match winning performance, the right arm off-break bowler claimed to want the wicket of Kohli. He said, “I will be playing in the Asia Cup for a second time and that will be a big achievement for me. I am targeting Virat Kohli in the Asia Cup, because he is a great batsman.”
Kohli’s stature as a great batter makes him a target with every bowler looking to prize his wicket. However, the 33 year old seemed to be settled and was batting well against Pakistan. He will be eager to build on his solid performance and spend more time in the middle.
An outing against minnows is exactly what Kohli needs to get amongst the runs and build up the confidence and get back to his best. It remains interesting to see how the 33 year old will fare when he walks out to bat at the Dubai International Stadium on 31st August.
