Can These Footballers From Sikkim Put India On The Global Map Of The Sport?

Football is a popular sport in the north-east of India with many notable players from states like Manipur, Mizoram, Assam etc. The introduction of Indian Super League (ISL) only pushed this passion for football forward and has continued to put many talented players in the spotlight. Sikkim is among the states that has produced some of the best footballers in the country like Bhaichung Bhutia and Nirmal Chettri. While Bhutia is no longer an active player, there are many skilled players from this state that fans should watch out for.

1. Bikash Jairu

Born on November 10, 1990, Bikash Jairu is one of the top players from the state of Sikkim. At the start of his career, Jairu signed up with Mumbai Tigers and scored multiple goals for the team during the 2013
I-League 2nd Division. He now plays as a midfielder for East Bengal in ISL and is also a part of the Indian national team. With a career total of 12 goals, Bikash Jairu has the potential to be a star footballer.

2. Komal Thatal

Professional footballer, Komal Thatal plays as a left-winger for ATK Mohun Bagan FC in the Indian Super League. The 20-year-old from Sikkim was one of the youngest footballers to play in the Indian Super League. Thatal also represented India in the FIFA World Cup in 2017 where he played in the U-17 team.

3. Novin Gurung

Playing as a full back for the SC East Bengal in ISL, Novin Gurung started his career in the Namchi Sports Hostel. In 2015, he joined the Shillong Lajong academy and began his professional career with the club in 2017. Although, still early into his football career Gurung is a dedicated player, slated to make his mark in the Indian football scene.

4. Nim Dorjee Tamang

Nim Dorjee Tamang plays as a center back for NorthEast United in the Indian Super League. He is a passionate footballer from Sikkim who began playing the sport with the Namchi Sports Hostel. Tamang enlisted with the Shillong Lajong F.C. youth team and scored his first goal for the club in 2015 while playing against Royal Wahingdoh. This 25-year-old is a promising footballer bound for success in this popular sport.
