Can India Still Qualify For The WTC Final?

The Indian cricket team find themselves in a very difficult position right now. They have just been whitewashed by New Zealand after losing all three games in their Test series against the Kiwis at home. This is the first time in history that India has been whitewashed at home. After being in a comfortable position to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, they suddenly find themselves in an extremely tough position, needing a miraculous result against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Test (BGT). This article talks about the Indian cricket team’s chances to qualify for the WTC final.

The Indian cricket team are in need of a brilliant result in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against the Australian cricket team. This will be extremely hard given the form both the teams are in as of now. India will play Australia directly after getting whitewashed 3-0 against New Zealand at home and will need a miraculous turnaround to get the result they want against the Australian cricket team.

The Men in Blue face a daunting challenge in their quest to qualify for the WTC final. The biggest problem for them is that their only chance to do so is in a five-game Border Gavaskar Test (BGT) series against Australia. This is arguably one of the toughest and most intense Test series in the world, and not only does India need a positive result, but it also has to win at least four games while getting a positive result in all to qualify without any conditions. This will be something extremely tough to do, and Australia will try their best to make sure India does not qualify for the WTC final.

The scenarios as of now stand as follows:

  • 4-0/5-0: India qualifies regardless of other results
  • 3-1/3-0/4-1: England must draw at least one test versus New Zealand
  • 2-0: England must win one test versus New Zealand
  • 3-2: England must win one test versus New Zealand and Sri Lanka must draw at least one test versus Australia
  • 2-1/1-1/1-0: New Zealand can win maximum of one match versus England and Sri Lanka must draw at least one test versus Australia
  • 2-2: New Zealand can win maximum one match versus England and Sri Lanka must win the series versus Australia

  • 2-3: New Zealand can win maximum one match versus England, South Africa must lose two of their four matches, and Sri Lanka must lose two of their four matches
  • 1-2/1-3/0-0/0-1: England must win the series versus New Zealand, Pakistan should win 2-0 against South Africa, Australia must win 2-0 against Sri Lanka, and South Africa must draw 1-1 with Sri Lanka
  • 1-4/0-2/0-3: England must win 2-0 or 3-0 versus New Zealand, Pakistan must win 2-0 versus South Africa, Australia must win 2-0 against Sri Lanka, and South Africa must draw 1-1 versus Sri Lanka
  • 0-4/0-5: India is disqualified

While the Indian cricket team is struggling as of now, no one will put it past them to upset Australia and get the result they need to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. This will be an incredibly tough task for Rohit Sharma’s side, but they have proved in the past that they never back down no matter how tough it gets, and the qualification is still in their hands and up for grabs. It will be very interesting to see if India can pull a masterclass out of the bag and qualify for the WTC final when the odds are stacked against him.
