The upcoming edition of the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to return to its original format. The IPL 2023 has been confirmed to be played in the home-and-away format with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly conveying the news to various affiliated cricket boards and state units involved.
Earlier, the IPL was organized on a limited number of venues in the previous season due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Back in 2020, India’s apex franchise based cricket tournament was played behind closed doors on just three venues in the UAE namely, Sharjah Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. Even during the 2021 edition, the cash reach league was organized on just four venues in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai.
The measures were taken in order to deal with the covid-19 pandemic that had affected the entire world. However, with the pandemic situation now under control, the IPL is said to return and be played in its old format where every participating team will square off against every other team twice, one on home and one away match.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly wrote a note to state units involved in IPL 2023 which read as, “The next season of men’s IPL will also go back to the home and away format with all ten teams playing their home matches at their designated venues.”
