Bhanuka Rajapaksa was Sri Lanka’s hero in the Asia Cup 2022 final with the middle order batter’s knock of 71 not out from 45 balls steering the game away from Pakistan. The left-hander claimed it to be one of the best innings he has ever played.
Sri Lanka found themselves in a spot of bother earlier in the final with the scoreboard reading 58 for 5 at nearly the halfway stage of their innings. The runs had dried up with the hosts most likely looking to post up a low score until Rajapaksa’s innings propelled Sri Lanka into a solid position and steered the team to a competitive total.
The 30-year-old stitched up a 58 run stand off just 36 balls with Wanindu Hasaranga and went on to accelerate in the death overs with Sri Lanka scoring 53 off the last five overs. Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s unbeaten 71 from 45 balls consisted of 6 fours and 3 sixes which pushed the teams’ total to 170 for 6 at the end of 20 overs.
Speaking with the media in the post-match press conference, Bhanuka Rajapaksa spoke about his innings and shared how the team wanted to show their aggression ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup. The left-hander said, “Of course it’s a wonderful moment and one of the best innings that I’ve played in a very short period of time. “We wanted to show the world… A couple of decades back, we had some sort of aggression in our side. And we wanted to create those moments again. “
“I think as a unit we’re doing it fantastically well at the moment and we just want to look forward to the World Cup as well and to keep up this momentum. As a nation, I think it is a great win with all the crises happening back home. These are tough times for Sri Lankans and we are glad and we hope we brought some smiles to their faces,” Bhanuka Rajapaksa added.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka also went on to share how the team had sat down for a serious discussion after suffering from a heavy defeat in the tournament opener against Afghanistan. He said, “After the first loss, we had a serious discussion. We knew that we had the talent so it was about applying [ourselves] during the game scenarios.”
“Before coming to the game, we knew that 170 would be a good score on this wicket because of the bowling we’ve got. As I mentioned earlier, we’ve got that variety in our line-up. It’s always tough to chase 170 in a final. There’s some mental aspect to it as well. I think the last six that Bhanu Rajapaksa hit was special as well,” Shanaka added.
