Sri Lanka batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa revealed how the experience of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be very helpful for his national team. The 30-year-old also went on to claim that he will look forward to carrying his IPL confidence at the upcoming continental tournament which kickstarts on 27th August.
Earlier scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka, the 6-nation tournament is all set to be in United Arab Emirates (UAE) this time around with Sri Lanka named as the hosts of the Asia Cup. They are set to play the opening clash of the 15th edition of the tournament when they take on Afghanistan.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa was bought by the Punjab Kings during the IPL 2022 auction which saw him get a chance to feature in the 15th edition of the tournament. The Sri Lankan impressed in the franchise based cricket league with his attacking approach. His exploits in the Indian Premier League also helped the 30 year old bag a contract with Dubai Capitals in the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20).
Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Bhanuka Rajapaksa revealed how he has brought a lot of positivity to the Sri Lankan side ahead of the Asia Cup. He was quoted saying, “For me, the experience I bring after playing in the IPL will create good energy for the side. One of the best chats I had with Liam [Livingstone] was when he said, ‘If it’s in the V, make sure the ball is in the trees’. He’d just be that aggressive. Proper slam-bang player.”

“Coming back to the Sri Lankan side, I have brought in a lot of positivity after speaking to a lot of the IPL players, like Shikhar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal and KG [Kagiso Rabada]. I don’t think I have the time to explain in detail the talks we had, but there were a lot of positive vibes. I’m hoping we can take that same brand of cricket to the world,” Bhanuka Rajapaksa added.
Sri Lanka’s national Team coach Chris Silverwood spoke about playing not playing the Asia Cup in UAE over Sri Lanka. ESPNcricinfo has quoted saying, “It would’ve been lovely to play [the Asia Cup] in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately it’s not happening there. We’ve embraced the fact that we have to play it here [in UAE]. We’re here to do our best to win the tournament.”
