BCCI Triples Salary for New Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar: Ajit Agarkar, a former India pacer, has been appointed as the men’s chief selector during a crucial period for Indian cricket. With the ODI World Cup approaching in three months and the demand for a transition becoming more vocal due to unfavorable outcomes, this decision is significant. The 45-year-old from Mumbai has taken over from Chetan Sharma, another former India pacer, who had to resign in February following his inappropriate remarks in a news channel’s sting operation.
With the new responsibility at hand, Agarkar is eager to fulfill his duties with utmost dedication and enthusiasm. However, there was a question about his requested pay amount. Initially, Agarkar was content with the salary offered for this position, but after careful consideration from both himself and other influential figures in the cricket industry, BCCI agreed to his request and increased his annual salary from ₹1 crore to ₹3 crore.
The salary of the other selectors has also been a topic of discussion, with many wondering if it will be increased. However, according to recent reports, their annual salary remains unchanged at ₹90 Lakhs.
The chief selector’s role remained vacant in February 2023, as Chetan Sharma had been dismissed earlier that year due to a controversial sting operation. In the operation, he allegedly stated that Hardik Pandya, who has been leading India in T20Is since the T20 World Cup, frequently visited his home.
Recently, Agarkar was a member of the coaching staff for the Delhi Capitals, but he was let go from his position a few days ago. The officials from BCCI made a unanimous decision to appoint him as Chief Selector and offered him a generous salary increase.
Several news sources reported that Agarkar was encouraged to apply for the position by a prominent figure in cricket, who is well-known for their achievements in the sport. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was looking for a candidate who was relatively young and had experience in selecting players, which made Agarkar an ideal candidate due to his past role as the Chief Selector of the Mumbai Cricket Association.
The selection panel comprises of well-known personalities including Shiv Sunder Das, Subroto Banerjee, Sridharan Sharath, and Salil Ankola. Their foremost task, under the leadership of Agarkar, will be to choose the perfect squad for the upcoming five-game T20I series against West Indies commencing on the 3rd of August.
