The International Cricket Committee (ICC) board is set to appoint a new chairman of cricket’s apex governing body in November. The process of roping in a new chairman was taken after a meeting in Birmingham with Greg Barclay’s tenure at the helm ending later in the year.
There has been a major change in the election process which will now see the candidate demand a simple majority to win. Also, the newly appointed member’s tenure will be for a two-year period starting on December 1, 2022, while ending on November 30, 2024.
Earlier, the ICC Board required a candidate in the running to have two-thirds majority to be elected as the chairman. However, that is no longer required with any candidate bagging 51 % of the votes will be deemed as the winner of the election. It will see the candidate require just nine votes from the 16-member board to get elected.

The ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, which consists of 16 members, has 2 current player representatives. The list includes Former India international and the current National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman and former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori. The other members on the 16-member board boasts of past player representatives in Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene as well as West Indies’ Roger Harper.
With Barclay’s term ending soon, rumors have started to pop up regarding ICC’s next chairman. There have been various speculations suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly could emerge as one of the strong contenders for the soon to be vacant position.
The former India captain is said to already have some sort of backing from several countries who would like to see him take up the role of being ICC’s next chairman. Despite strong rumours, a BCCI official is claimed to have responded to the speculations by sharing how it “it’s too early” to make any comment on the topic.
However, Ganguly’s future will also depend on the Supreme Court’s verdict on the cooling-off period of the BCCI president and the secretary Jay Shah. A hearing to resolve the matter has been scheduled to take place on July 27and will see Chief Justice N.V. Ramana head the bench.
